    1st day on Atkin's..

    Hello,

Today is my first day on the Atkins diet so I'm still a little confused.
This morning i had 2 eggs(1g carb) and one ounce of gouda(1g carb), so that makes 2 carbs.
For lunch i had 2 cups of shredded cabbage(4g carb) with some tuna and 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise(2g carb), so that's another 6 carbs(Total= 8g)
I'm only on 4 grams of carbs directly from veggies(the cabbage) so far today so i'll need another 8g-10g of carbs from veggies if i have understood correctly.
I have a tin of veggies: peas, green beans, diced carrots, diced turnips, water, salt, aroma.
I know I'm not supposed to eat the ready made stuff but on the tin it says that for 100g of the product there's 6.6g of carb(-3.8g fiber)=2.8g of NET carbs... What do you think, can I eat it?

    Catriona.

I know that the peas and carrots are a no no. The green beans are fine and I'm not sure about the rest. I never knew there was a certain amount of carbs you should get from veggies, just 3-4 cups. What you have eaten so far looks great!

Damn I really wanted to eat that tin!
I guess I'll have a tomato to bulk up the carbs a bit.

That's the link to the atkins site where I learnt about the specific quantity of carbs from salad greens and other veggies.
It's a really good site, I keep checking the 'carb counter' 8)

Well I was kind of confused about the whole no carrots nor peas thing because the nutritional values on the tin seemed good. I guess there are just some things you shouldn't eat even if the carb content seems to be low.
I'm also curious about how much I'll lose on induction but I guess I'll just have to wait and see since everyone is different.
    I'll keep you posted!

well there is a list of allowed foods and not allowed foods. carrots and peas are not on that list. from that list, you can get your 20 grams of net carbs.

we can't eat carrots and peas because they're very high on the glycemic index and make your blood sugar level shoot up very quickly. I used to have the page for allowed carbs but I don't anymore because i just use the list in the book. does anyone else have it?

Once you've been on the diet awhile and your body is used to no sugar, you can add peas and carrots (in small quantities) once in awhile, and it won't affect your glycemic index (eating them with protein is best). But it's a good idea to stay away from them in the beginning (first few months).
