Metformin v Atkins... what is your opinion?

    Hi people!!!

I'm new in this forum and decided to register after I saw some posts, which are so helpful and lovely that I felt like being part of this "family" here...
    hope I'm welcome!

Well, I just started Atkins on Monday 11th July, but I'm worried whether it will work with all the "hormonal" problems I've got.

I have hypothyroidism since 2001, and take 100mcg of thyroxin everyday. Besides that, last year they found I have polycistic syndrome, that caused me to develop Insulin Resistance...

I take 2 tablets of Metformin a day, lunch and dinner. So my question is, I know some of you are on Metformin as well, do you notice any difference between you and "normal" people when doing Atkins? I mean, you lose kg (sorry I don't understand pounds very well) slower because of that? And if it's true that Atkins makes the insulin problem better, wouldn't I be "overdosing" myself with insulin by taking the Metformin?

Sorry for so many questions but I'm really interested in the subject!
    Cheers all!!!

Of course you are welcome silly girl!!

I am no doctor Valeska but I am on 1500 mg of Metformin a day for PCOS. From what I know about it with experience is that it will help in your weight loss alone. It is a very very slow loss though. Atkins definately helps speed up the progress. I have been on Metformin since the start of this plan and have had no problems losing weight. The only problem I have had is with the occasional brownie here and there. I was only 10 pounds from my goal when I got pregnant. I am still on Metformin and eating the Atkins way (after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes) and have only gained 23 pounds. I am just 3 weeks away from delivery. (whew )

I do not know about the other meds you are taking but hopefully that helps.

    Goos luck and welcome!

    Many hugs,
    Tonya

awww Tonya you're really a sweetie...
    thanks a lot!!!

I feel more confident now, well, I always lost weight in a good speed when I did low fat diets, but I didn't have the IR. Let's see now in Atkins what happens...

And wooow, it's really close for your baby arrival, I wish you and (him or her?) all the best, make sure to keep us all updated about that, as soon as you feel ok with coming here, ok?!

    Cheers and keep in touch!

    Valeska.

    Hi

I used to take 2000mg of Metformin a day (when I started this diet.
I stopped after about 5 months on the diet because my blood sugar dropped low. I now take it from time to time because of some resaerch showing it to have advantages for longevity (I think related to the advantages of Atkins). I do not think Metformin affected my weight loss.

    Hi

I was on 2000mg of Metformin when I started this diet. I lost
about 2 pounds a week average and reached my goal. I
stopped taking Metformin because my blood sugar became fine (because
of this diet). I am now taking it on and off again because it has been found to be a powerful anti-aging drug. I haven't had any problems with it
    but some here have.

    Good luck!

I have PCOS, and Metformin made me far too sick. If I took one or two a day (I can't remeber the gram amount) I would be sick for the rest of the day. Sometimes the smell was enough to induce vomiting. I eventually had to quit, so the doctor just kept me on the pills. I've been doing atkins though and lost about 15 pounds.

I only started to notice a smell after I started to get sick from it. Maybe it's all in my head. The idea of it helping with my weight loss is very tempting, but I'm just too sensitive to it by now.

    Word of caution

When you are on medication to deal with your blood sugar and then decided to do the Atkins diet... Please advise your doctor and test yourself frequently to monitor your blood sugar.
