I thought I'd start this since nobody has jumped in. My experience with Atkins and diabetes has been very positive (soory if this is a repeat for most here). I started with high BP and a Hem A1c of 8.5 taking 2000mg of metformin per day. After 3 weeks BP was normal, after 3 monthe Hem A1c was 6.2 and after one year 5.9 (where 6 is normal).
I lapsed due to family medical problems from Nov. 2004 to late Feb. or so 2005. My BP went back up and I had swings in blood sugar (although not as bad as before I started this diet). For me this WOE is essential for health. I'm sure it would be more difficult for a type 1 diabetic (they need sugar from time to time because of hypoglycemia) but for all type II diabetics it should be a good thing and for those recently diagnosed as type II, I believe you can even reverse the effects. You need to stay under the care of an MD and take your blood sugar readings but I can't say enough positive about this (only to you all of course) I still have people go ballistic over being "sort of diabetic" and eating this way. They all say that low fat is the diabetic diet. But there are many new articles on the good effects of olive oil (oleic acid), butter (conjugated linoleic acid), and Omega 3s (from flax and fish) on diabetes.
