The Diet Rite's doesn't equal any carbs, right??
right. but on induction your supposed to limit them to 3 per day and only after you have your 64 oz. of water.![]()
It's those sugar alcohols that have the potential of derailing you, especially if you can't count on being able to exercise.[/quote]
Hi everyone, I've been following this topic with interest. I'm in my second week of induction and feeling good. My sugar cravings have gone WAY WAY down, which is nothing short of miraculous for me. I'm hesistant to try sweeteners, afraid it'll make me crave sweets, but I would like to have a little dessert sometime.
Can you tell me about the sugar alcohol? Is it in the book somewhere or online somewhere? Thanks for your help.

Liquid splenda is not available to anyone except manufacturers. Diet Rite soda, Food Lion diet sodas, West Soy Soy Slender milk -- for example.http://www.countcarbs.com/advice/splenda_list.htm
There were some companies Nature's Flavors http://www.naturesflavors.com/default.php?cPath=39
and Trish's low carb that made a "liquid splenda concentrate" --- very high powered sweetner - 1.5 teaspoons sweetened like 1 cup of sugar! Great stuff -- until McNeil Laboratories (makers of Splenda)
pulled the plug on them, threatened lawsuits and now they stopped manufacturing them. http://www.splenda.com/index.jhtml
DaVinci, Torani and another company that starts with an "M" make Sugar free syrups sweetened with splenda --- they are wonderful. Walmart usually carries the SF vanilla and Hazelnut. TJMaxx and Marshalls sells lots of other flavors, but it is catch as catch can.

Here is the controversy :

Read the controversy. While I agree in general with what it says about needing more testing which unfortunately will only come with time and being used by the public, as a medicinal chemist, I find some of the statements almost as misleading as the those that they quoted from the manufacturer. The inuendos about relating to pesticides (the ones that we know like DDT and PCB's) aren't true. I won't bore you with details, but suffice to say, the molecules are not alike. The by product that they mention has had testing and what we have seen so far has been good (much like we would test any drug before bringing it to market). Certainly more testing will clarify that.
I think the truth lies somewhere in between. I for one won't be worrying about Splenda and, as for any sweetener, "fake" or "real", I will limit my intake to be moderate and wait for the data to be more convincing to quit using it.
The liquid splenda is really hard to get and very expensive. I bought a bottle online a couple months back and I love the stuff. It's great when you want to sweeten a recipe without adding carbs (great for cheesecakes) However for any recipe where added liquid is not a problem I just use Torani syrup. 8 oz cost me $17.99 plus about $8 shipping. 8 oz is the equivilent of 32 cups of sugar. It took several weeks for them to ship it a it was backordered at the time. The web site I got it from is Locarber.com. They still mention it on their website but no ordering info, just a note to email them for info. I sent them an email a week ago to find out if it was still available and they have not responded to me yet. If anyone else knows of a source let us know because I would definitely want to order more.
Does anyone ever get a tooth ache when using Splenda? Every time I eat or drink anything with Splenda in for example Fruit 2 O my teeth just ache. It isn't just one tooth it seems to just make them ache in general. I have some bridge work that is really sensitive. Just wondering.
I like Splenda but mix it with other sweetners for better flavor. After a friend showed me some "safety" concerns about SPlenda I went to MEDLINE to check out the quoted studies. I believe that Splenda is reasonably safe, the bad effects are less than if you dosed a rat with 3% body weight of sucrose (reg sugar). It does not have a large amount of human tests (the only really true criticism) but the toxicity studies show significantly less bad than for other artificial sweetners. The major bad effect from overdosing whatever animal with Spenda were the same as if you took too much of something not digestable (gas etc.). By the way a human study where they tagged the sucralose molecules radioactively showed about 97% recovery of the intact molecule mostly in the stool but some in pee (gross study). Anyway unless you're eating cups of this per day I don't think you're harming yourself in any way.
Here is a sight that helped me tremendously! It's a product list published by Splenda..

Cubbie,
your bridge shouldnt be sensitive dear.If it is your bridge then you may have a leak and should see your dentist. I was never a dentist but I was a dental assistant and I have a bridge.
Are you sure its splenda making your teeth hurt or just cold. Some people are just cold sensitive. Sometimes I am sensitive to sweets for a few days (usually noticed with fruit20) and then it just goes away. So yes, i think the fruit 2 0 can make your teeth hurt. How long has it been hapening?
If its just splenda and sweets in general, fruit 2 0 or an atkins bar, you probably have a cavity. Sometimes it seems like more than one tooth is hurting while in fact it is only one pain spreading in your mouth.
I would still go to the dentist and have that bridge checked out. when they put cold air and water on it you will know what your sensitive to. either the cold, or sweets, or maybe its a cavity and it can be fixed.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

Dawn125 --- Trish's low Carber was the company I refered to -- they were denied further use of splenda to make their concentrate syrup. I bought two from her when i heard McNeil pulled the plug on her use of splenda for the concentrate -- and she just sold out her supply and isn't allowed to make more.
Shame too - because I really like the convenience and ability to combine with other sweetners -- like Firelady, I find that combining sweetners works better - no aftertaste and I don't use as much of either sweetner!
