    Water

I'm having trouble drinking all the water I should, are you allowed to use flavours to make it taste better as long as it is low carb? I read somewhere that for example, drinking diet coke wasn't as good as just drinking pure water, but, I mean if it has water in, you're getting water, right?

Anyone have any good ideas to spice up water a bit, because it's getting troublesome to drink all that water.

aw dk it is a shame isn't it???

but grab yourself a big water bottle, and fill it a couple times a day...carrying it around with you helps a lot! i drink 3x 750ml bottles a day - one at breakfast/morning; one at lunch/early afternoon, and one later in the afternoon. it gets easier, i hope you're doing okay with it?

I think I now know why I have been a bit static on the scales for a few weeks. Having a cold has meant that I have needed warm drinks so I have been having decaf with cream - careful to stay to the measurements. still got a cold but will go back to the plain water.

I've been wondering about the "whoosh fairy"...is that "whoosh" because of dropping on the scale, or because of liquid output? A couple of weeks ago, I had a funny sensation of output being way more than input, a virtual "whoosh", which seemed to have precipitated breaking through a plateau.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately...the past few weeks, I've been drinking a minimum of 2L/64oz per day, but usually not much more than that (except that I do tend to drink 2 12oz cups of green tea every morning, before starting on water). Yesterday, I drank at least double that (up in the 5L/160oz range), as a test. This morning, I noticed breaking through the next plateau again.

I guess I'm proving to myself that water is indeed one of the real secrets.

Hey, guys... sorry I've been away for a long time. It's good to be back.

I have read an explanation for the whoosh fairy that makes sense to me. Here goes:

Our fat cells want to maintain their physical size. (The reason is not clear.) Every day, we normally fluctuate a little in our calorie intake and output. To maintain cell wall equilibrium, if intake is less than output, the fat cells fill out with a little water. It takes a few days or even weeks, at times, to convince the fat cells that, no, we really will not fill them up with fat again.

So, while we can't see any results on the scales, we actually are trading out fat for water, in those fat cells. Eventually, the fat cells are convinced that it is safe to let go of cell wall size, and suddenly we see fantastic results for days or even weeks of hard work. And we go, and go, and go....

This is why drinking enough water is so important. We not only are flushing out toxins through the kidneys, but we also are washing the fat out of the fat cells, in a way.

The whole theory of water filling fat cells makes no logical sense to me. One drop of water weighs more than one drop of fat (the amount one fat cell holds). Therefore, if fat cells were to "fill with water" for any reason... we would gain weight on the scale, NOT stay the same.

    Fat cell facts:

Once all of your fat cells are full, if your body needs to store more fat (over eating) the cells will divide to produce more cells for fat storage.
Once a fat cell has been made, it NEVER goes away... you're stuck with it for life.
Fat cells, when emptied still exist... they're just flat.

I can find absolutely NO scientific proof/tests/studies that support the "water into fat cells" theory. Does anyone have that info? Or is it just one more "muscle weight more than fat" mumbo jumbo?

    You may be correct, Tril.
I have been searching... I did come up with this, from http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat...uishy-fat.html
...Back during my college days, one of my professors threw out the idea that after fat cells had been emptied of stored triglyceride, they would temporarily refill with water (glycerol attracts water, which might be part of the mechanism). So there would be no immediate change in size, body weight or appearance. Then, after some time frame, the water would get dropped, the fat cells would shrink. A weird way of looking at it might be that the fat loss suddenly becomes ‘apparent’. That is, the fat was emptied and burned off days or weeks ago but until the water is dropped, nothing appears to have happened. For nearly 20 years I looked for research to support this, I was never sure if it was based on something from the 50’s or he just pulled it out of thin air as an explanation. Recently, one paper did suggest that visceral fat can fill up with water after massive weight loss but that’s about it.
Somewhat circumstantially, people using Bioimpedance body fat scales (which use hydration to estimate body fat levels) have noted that body fat appears to go up right before a big drop. This implicates water balance as the issue here...
But, that was all I could come up with.

LOL Blue... no, muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. Muscle is denser than fat so if the volume is the same, the wt of the muscle would be more. But a pound/kg of muscle weighs the same as a pound/kg of fat... or nails... or feathers... or water... or sand... or apples. Weight, density and volume aren't the same thing so you can't say muscle weighs more than fat unless you qualify it with volume.

As for the difference in "texture"... I'm not convinced that any change felt is happening in the fat. Inflammation happens in more than one cell type... when your ankles swell, it's not caused by water in fat cells. If I could find ANY reference to fat cells filling with water (other than on weight loss forums where it's repeated as often as "muscle weighs more than fat") I might be more open to the concept. But there's nothing out there in any article, report or study that even mentions this... so I'm very skeptical. That doesn't mean it isn't true... just that I don't believe it. LOL

hiya bluey - that's what i always took "muscle weighs more than fat" to mean.... and i reckon any resonable person would know that a pound is a pound is a pound...it just takes more effort to explain that the same amount volume-wise of muscle weighs more than fat.... i think generally people know what that means, and if they don't...they need it explained....

    meanwhile, i need some water

and - you can lose fat cells - with liposuction!! lololol

I have to disagree to an extent drinking water thats diluted is about as good i mean yes it becomes slightly acidic or whatever, but what ever other crap you have had will end up diluting it anyway just as long as its light flavouring and not coca cola zero and diet ( that your counting as water ) should be fine, i still drink water / water diluted / dr pepper zero but i always make sure i at least 3 - 4 glasses of water / diluted water a day and make sure at least one of them is pure water then what ever other drinks i have i make sure its got 0 Carbs in.

I sometimes have 1 - 2 cups of coffee a day also since ground coffee has no carbs i just use sweeteners idk what kind but the ones i have are 0 carbs and soya milk which is 2.4ish carbs per 100ml which is way under 20g of carbs a day i have anyway coz i mostly eat salad for my actual carbs and everything else is normally just pure meats like fish and bacon

but this is just my opinion but i really dont see how slightly diluting water hurts. just dont count any fizzy pop as water because its nothing like water it doesnt hydrate your system anything thats carbonated dehydrates you, make sure your water consumption beats your carbonated liquids consumption.

but once again my opinion, but i dont see how anything i said isnt reasonable???

I think the explanation about muscle and fat weight can be better
understood if you think of it this way. A CUP of fat vs a CUP of muscle. The muscle will weigh more than the fat. Now, look at a 5'3" woman. She can weigh 120 and be a size ten or 120 and be a size 6 depending on whether she works out and builds muscle. Smaller body measurements come with the muscle. (unless she is working out to be a bodybuilder! Lol)
