    "steadyed"

Started Atkins June 21,2010. My second attempt.
    Starting weight 194
Current weight 190; moderate sugar cravings all week. Happy to get the first few days under my belt, so to speak.

    Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for your reply. I eat boiled eggs in the morning, no lunch, olives and cheddar cheese for a snack in the day and chicken with broccoli for dinner, some nights a salad in stead of the broccoli. I drink lots of water. Candy used to be a regular part of my day and I miss it, but I know it was a symptom of my poor eating habits. How long have you been on your diet?
PS. I read in your induction post (acceptable foods) that caffeinated coffee may cause cravings and I always start the day with a big cup. That could be it.
    Thanks.

It might also be from not eating enough and/or skipping lunch... it's not sugar cravings, it's hunger. LOL Is there a reason for not eating lunch? Even a little bit is better than none. Your body can't maintain and "even keel" on no food at all. Just a suggestion...

    Welcome!!

    Skipped lunches

OK, this sounds like good advice. I'll add a chicken breast for lunch and have my olives and cheese then. Also I will eliminate the cottage cheese as this seems like an unacceptable induction item. I appreciate the suggestions.
    Thanks, Greg

Most men can eat a lot more than what you're eating and still lose like crazy. If you don't mind sharing, how much do you figure you need to lose? How old are you? Do you exercise? This is the kind of info that's helpful when making suggestions to people.

I am 62 years old, semi-retired. I work in an elementary school (Sept- June) as a teaching assistant. I am on my feet most of the day. In the summer I do projects in the garden and wood workshop. However I do not have a special exercise regime. Til age 50, I weighed about 160. Returning to that is my goal. I am reasonably convinced that weighing less will significantly benefit me as I age. I have walked around "feeling" the extra weight for a couple of years. I am looking long term here. I walked the complete Appalachian Trail in 2004. When I finished I felt fantastic (160 lbs). I appreciate the support and suggestions of the forum. Thanks, Greg

One week so far. Weight as of 6/28/10 = 189 lbs
Loss so far = 5 lbs.
I am eating more meals per day now and feel pretty good.
I am getting to know a lot about chicken. Have tired on the olives but still enjoy a piece of cheddar. Homemade tunafish salad is my latest favorite.
    I am hanging in there.

    Progress, menu, Salt question.

    July 4th, 2010, weight = 186, net loss = 8 lbs
Tuna salad with eggs for breakfast
Salad with Avocado and celery and cucumber with Spring green and olive oil.
Sauteed chicken with a little broccoli at night, Atkins vanilla shake foe a snack.
I am losing weight fast now and I expect that to level off. I have been working lots of hot summer hours in the garden, drinking plenty (water). Does anyone have experience with altering the Salt in their diet. A friend noticed I used a lot.

My progress as of July 23, 2010

I was on vacation for a week in Cape Cod and was able (mostly) to stick to my guns. We went out to eat a lot with the family and so I had some restaurant food. When I returned I found that I had not lost any further weight. I have found it pretty comfortable to be "strict" again and get back to my mostly home made menu.
    Weight today = 186 lbs
My goal for next Wednesday is 184-185.
I am eating more tuna fish salad now and a few more garden vegetables, still a lot of chicken and broccoli, however I am not bored. I have an Advantage shake or two in the afternoon.

Hey Steadyed and congrats on your progress so far.

I'd actually like to know exactly how you make that tuna salad? Because whatever I end up making tastes so boring, and tuna is real cheap here and I am on a low budget this month.

OK, Here's my Tuna Salad Recipe: (Roughly)
2 Cans white Tuna fish in water (Drained)
Equal quantity of Celery (Rough Cut, nothing special)
    1/4 cup chopped yellow onion
1/2 to 1 cup Mayo (I use Olive Oil based Mayo form Whole Foods, brand name I believe is just 365)
    Old Bay seasoning (to taste)
    Sea Salt
    Freshly Ground Black Pepper

Mix all this with a large fork in a bowl. I like it kind of chunky. If you powermix this it gets kinda mushy. I am sure there are other herbs that can be added to taste. I got this from the Internet. Not original with me.
    Thanks, Greg

Tuna can be mixed with lots of things.... I like to add chopped dill pickle, capers, boiled egg, chives, green onion, chopped lettuce, black olives, red and yellow pepper, onion, celery (not all this at once, just pick what sounds good to you)... even a bit of Ranch dressing with the mayo sometimes. I don't use quite as much mayo as Steadyed does... but then, I like mine on the dry side. One way to "wake up" tuna salad is to put in something like hallowed out large cherry tomatoes... they make a great snack.

Oh... and try tuna packed in olive oil for a REALLY nice change. It's good! I like to use this when I'm going to eat it without mayo... like on top of a salad. Very moist. Drain it, but don't squeeze it.

    August 4th weigh-in!

Weight = 184.5 lbs. It has been about 45 days and I have lost roughly 10 lbs. I'm doing great. Eggs, sauteed chicken, Tuna fish, some avocado, hamburgers, cheese , steaks and cashews. I need to diversify a little. I don't feel like wandering to far from the kitchen. I miss induction. I felt more militaristic (read disciplined) about my bounds. Cie-la-vie. Let's face it 10 lbs in 45 days is a little less than a quarter pound of fat per day. Its summer and when I work outside I can drink three or four liters a day. When is a good time in the day to weigh yourself? Don't get me wrong, I do not want this thing to be all about pounds. But it is important to me right now. Tomorrow I am making a wooden box to carry all the weight I have lost. My mobile motivation. I want to feel some progress. What better way than to carry it a few places?

    Weight August 23rd, 2010

I weighed in today at 179. It seems I have been pretty static (182-184) for a couple of weeks now. I am pleased with my progress, but if I don't make 175 by the first of September it is no big deal. The important thing is for me to have a plan and recognize the foods to avoid. My next goal is to run in the Thanksgiving Manchester Road Race. I would like to cross the starting line at 165 lbs. That's 14 lbs in 3 months. I know I can do it. I am getting tired of meat. So I'll be slowly shifting to the best vegetables for me. Looks like I'm headed back to the Atkin's food list.
