After working out with weights, I understand you need to consume some carbs (in order to restore some glycogen) in order to build muscle.
Would it be "OK" to have some carbs post workout - IF your goal is to increase muscle mass?

I don't do the weights but run a bit. I find that I do need a few extra carbs.

Actually there are many protein drinks to do exactly that - I use Sci-MX Protein quoting from the tin... "Protein is the single most important nutrient that muscles need to grow" it also includes vits an Amino Acid profile which includes Glutamic acid and glycine... and more...
it's actually recomended u have carbs, the reason being an 'insulin spike' to help restore muscle glycogen quicker. altho it's not required imo as its mainly the ATP store's that take the beating when doing weight lifting only (short bursts). anyway... if your in a calorie deficit you wont be building any/much new muscle, but rather helping maintain what you have.

And it is actually a very bad idea as you are trying to avoid insulin spikes on a low carb diet. Your body will never adjust to maximum health if you keep jerking it around. Have a good high protein & fat meal or snack afterwards - your body can actually live totally without carbs, you know, although it is a bit extreme. It can make all the fuel it needs from protein & fat.
Hav a look at Mark Sisson's primal pages, he doesn't give himslf carb treats after workouts & he is 58 & looks fantastic.

lol forgot what forum i was on when i answered this. no carbs or PROTEIN SHAKES on a keto...dunno if protein shakes are acceptable on atkins tho? BUT....if u wern't on keto, carbs (preferably glucose) PWO is something you should never miss out... an 'insulin spike' is one of the most anabolic states your body can be in so take advantage.
Read this blog, http://waroninsulin.com/ He is a long distance (30 - 60 miles) swimmer and has friends who work out as hard, on few carbs.
I am Arlene and Dr Mary Vernon says it best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaquSijXJkQ for me. I used to stand under my plum tree waiting for the fruit to ripen and fall, now I stand near a coconut tree.
"Let me have men about me that are fat, sleek-headed men and such as sleep a-nights. Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look. He thinks too much. Such men are dangerous." William Shakespeare ++++++++++++ I pray, let me one of the dangerous.
his opening - "I’m Peter Attia, and I’m about to challenge everything you think you know about nutrition, and how it impacts your health and performance. If you’re interested in losing weight, increasing your endurance, increasing your mental acuity, getting rid of your blood pressure and diabetes medicine, or just learning why almost everything the “experts” tell you is wrong, you’ve come to the right place."
good read....but the question was regarding bodybuilding![]()
