    Top Foods for Dieting

These foods will help you in a variety of ways. Some will help increase your metabolism. Most will help make you feel more full. Others can actually help burn fat.

    1. Apples

The pectin in apples makes you feel more full. This is a great way to eat less. In addition, the pectin actually limits your cells fat absorption. Try an apple in the morning during breakfast or try it as a midday snack.

    2. Avocadoes

Avocadoes are proof that a food does not have to be low in fat to help you lose weight. Instead, it needs to have the right kind of fat. Avocadoes contain more than 25 of the essential nutrients. When you eat an avocado you're getting B vitamins, potassium, vitamin E, and lutein.

    3. Grapefruits

Of all the citrus foods, grapefruit ranks the best as a diet food. It can lower your insulin levels which in turn will make you less hungry. If you don't like grapefruit, add a different citrus fruit. Both grapefruits and oranges can increase your metabolism. The vitamin C actually dilutes fat.

    4. Hot peppers

Spicy foods such as jalapeņos are one of the best diet foods. They give a quick boost to the metabolism. They also prove that healthy food is not necessarily bland.

    5. Broccoli

Broccoli is a powerful anticancer food. Its high in calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. It's filling without being high in calories.

    6. Blueberries

Blueberries are full of powerful antioxidants. They fight against disease, give you energy, and their sweet taste makes a great snack.

    7. Almonds

Of all the nuts, almonds are the most nutritional. Have a handful of almonds in the morning during breakfast to give you energy for the rest of the day. They are also great to replace any unhealthy snack foods which are standing in the way of your weight loss goals.

Brayoon... welcome and thank you for posting!

Love your list. I would probably rename it "Top Foods For Living" (but not for Atkins or South Beach, Phase One). We don't eat fruit in the first phase of these plans.

Do you plan to do either of these?

First, may I offer my WELCOME to the forum! Lots of good folks here...we do our best to encourage everyone. Thanks for your post!

I DEFINITELY advocate the avocado! Having spent a lot if my life in SoCal, one year we lived in an apartment while our house was built and it had an avocado tree just outside our front door. I'd have to go out early to beat the kids to the "low hanging fruit" or "fallen fruit" as they used them as baseballs!

Satisfies that need for something "creamy", is the base for Guacamole (who does NOT love that!) and it is very high in fiber. That's why it is so low-carb!

I eat them with lemon and a dash of salt right out of their shells! They add so much to a "taco salad."

    Fitness food

    I think
The perfect portable snack. They're one of the richest sources of potassium, which may help regulate blood pressure, and are good sources of fiber. Frozen banana chunks make a terrific guilt-free snack. Bananas are also a natural antacid and help keep your muscles from cramping.
    and second is
Probably the most concentrated source of beta-carotene, which, in addition to its possible role as a cancer fighter, may play a key role in preventing the formation of cataracts later in life. Beta-carotene, a source of Vitamin A, also may boost your immune system's ability to fight bacterial and viral infections.

What is with this fruit stuff lately?

Atkins Induction = NO FRUIT, none... zip... zero... nada... zilch.

Before posting on a low carb forum, please ask yourself if your message is relevant or not. Advocating fruit consumption here is not helpful, relevant or appropriate. Sheesh already. Before you know it, someone's going to be extolling the virtues of instant (100 calorie!!!) oatmeal packs.

Sorry... rant over... must be hormonal or something.

LOL... I deleted the pancake suggestion post after I saw it. You're probably right about the "error of our ways" being the reason for these posts. But, for the record, my rant WAS hormonal... if you get my drift. LOL

Green tea is also a good option to try as it has been found to help loose weight to a great extent.

I think this stream shows us exactly what a great opportunity we have to educate people. I know it can be tempting to delete a post which advocates "plenty of fruit salad" or something similar. But, if anyone in "real life" makes the same suggestion to me, I always ask them to show me their evidence before I offer to show them mine.

For example - claims that certain fruit can "cure cancer." Bring it on guys. Then I'll point them to www.badscience.net so they can read up on some facts.

Or if someone starts talking about Antioxidants in tea, or the principle of "De-tox" (exactly what is a "toxin" anyway?) or even worse "Boosting your immune system" I just smile and again, ask them for hard evidence before reminding them that the immune system is a highly developed mechanism, which, if "boosted", is generally known as Leukemia.

Time after time, people tell me - "You've got to have your carbs" They mean well. I repeat Taubes' line (often) "There's no such thing as an essential carbohydrate"

There is a LOT of ignorance about Low Carb out there. And until this year I was one of them. It's not somebody's fault just because they're repeating what they've learned. But if we can influence one person to discover the truth for themselves, and to try Low Carb because they've educated themselves, then we've had a great day at the office.
If you want to change some things in your life, you've got to change some things in your life.

David PLEASE stop posting these great links I get nothing done ( just kidding, keep it up!). I agree with you, these anti-posts should be left on here so people can read the rebuttals and make up their own minds.
I'm finding it interesting as well that a book written by an expert in a particular field is very good on that subject but spouts 'recieved wisdom' on another. I'm reading one about Paleolithic Man by an evolutionary anthropologist and one on Vitamin D by the world expert and BOTH say cut down on saturated fat. Hmmm. Always check your references. Damn you, Taubes...

That's an easy one - tell her you don't take dietry advice from people who eat cookies... (Or ice cream, or chocolate, or what-ever-else-she-enjoys-but-shouldn't)

How old is she? We have a reading list. in the book review section. She's only looking after you. But education is the key. You can't expect her to just accept that it's all ok. She has to have access to the same information you did if she's ever going to be convinced. Getting her onto this forum would be a great start.

I think your best option is to just eat well on vacation... she probably has NO idea what you really eat. When she sees you eating all those veggies and moderate amounts of lean meat, cheese and healthy fats she should stop badgering you. If she doesn't... well, you ARE the mother, right? Tell her to stop. Tell her you heard her... you took her advice under consideration... but you are making this choice FOR yourself BY yourself... and the subject is now closed.

I would also suggest that you don't push the limits on Atkins while you are there... if you only eat bacon, eggs and huge fatty steaks while you're with her, you'll be reinforcing the mistaken image that most people have regarding the Atkins Diet. Model it correctly... and she'll leave you alone. Insist on veggie with b'fast... "gotta get my vegetables in". Have salad with chicken or tuna for lunch... add healthy fats like olives and avocado and use EVOO and vinegar for dressing. Snack on raw almonds (ONE ounce) and cucumbers. For dinner have TWO cooked veggies and a moderate serving of meat. Add real butter to your veggies, but don't glob it on. Have fresh berries for dessert. Insist on exercising... ask her to walk with you. Tell her exercise is REQUIRED on Atkins (it is, that's no lie). Take your multi-vitamin in front of her (that's required, too). Drink water water water. Limit your alcohol to one small (4 to 6 oz) glass of wine. You do all of this... and she will shut up. LOL
