Here is something I found on about.com
The latest book in the Atkins series is the Atkins Diabetes Revolution, based on the practice of Robert C. Atkins, with colleagues Mary C. Vernon and Jacqueline A Eberstein. The book offers a comprehensive program that includes diet, exercise, and nutrient supplementation.
Who is this diet for?
There is no one diet that is right for everyone. The Atkins diet is best suited for people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or who are overweight and at risk for developing this disease.
With any diet you should consult with your doctor for sure!!!!!!!!! I have a freind that is type 2 and ever since she started atkins she hasn't had to take insulin.. As far as being in kitosis ,, would mean the sugar levels are out of wack and could be serios,, here is something also i found on about.com
Diabetic ketoacidosis, aka DKA, is a serious complication of diabetes, which occurs when a very high blood sugar level (above 300 mg/dL) is coupled with a severe shortage of insulin in the body. This is more common in Type I diabetes because the body produces very little or no insulin on it's own. The body starts to break down fat for energy and ketones (toxic acids) develop. People with DKA usually complain of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, and sometimes a fruity odor on their breath. This can lead to coma or death and should be treated by medical personnel immediately
So please have him consult his doctor
Hes spoken to quite a few doctors and diabetic nurses about this diet most of them say give it a go, if it works for you thats great. One nurse said he shouldn't follow atkins he should follow a diet involving wholemeal bread and salad etc which he did but with that diet his gloucose levels went through the roof, when he explained this to her she called him a liar![]()
With atkins so far his glucose levels are at a normal level and he has loads more energy.
Hes on day 6 of the induction at the moment.
He has type 2 diabetes and take metformin and glicazide to control it.
He is also around 310lb and is obese so he really has to lose weight for health reasons.
Thanks for that I personally don't think hes eating enough. Hes eating less than me and I'm not eating that much but he says hes just not hungry. Its hard for him to tell if hes lost weight as our electronic scales will not settle on a weight it keeps fluctuating. We need to buy a normal set of scales but are unsure which one to get
Medications can also have an impact on weight loss. He may wish to discuss w/his doc or pharmacist if any of his medications may have a side effect of weight gain or something similar...
Also the diabetes itself might be the culprit. In his book, Dr. Atkins stated that insulin resistance can cause little to no weight loss during induction... But, the good news is that you've stated his blood sugar is stable, and he has oodles of energy. Also, he's detoxifying his system as well which will definitely help down the road!
It may just take a little more time for his pounds to melt. I'm sure a nice discussion with his doc and pharmacist will be helpful. Best of luck to both of you!!
Blessings,
Lisa
