Howdy,
My real name is Jonathan, I'm 25, and I live in the bay area of California (or as I call it "Kali-forni-stan", the laws here drive me nuts sometimes ). I'm 6'2", 320 pounds. I have a fair amount of muscle, but definitely a lot of fat, and that fat needs to go!
A little bit about myself (I'm using this as a bit of a diary so please bare with me). I have always been overweight. Ever since I was a young kid I loved to eat, any and all things that weren't sweet were game. I've never been super big on sweets, I'll eat them if they are around or offered, but I never crave them (I guess this helps for this kind of a lifestyle). I've always loved the ritual that goes with eating as I rarely ever just eat on the run. I love to set up in front of the TV with whatever it is I am going to have and throw my feet up and eat until I'm full. Well, I guess I should have put that in the past-tense as this desire has really diminished over the last couple of years.
When I was 20 I entered culinary school, as being a chef has always been a dream of mine since I was little. I LOVED every minuted of being in school, the chef-instructors were wonderful, and I would do it over in a second. I worked in quite a few restaurants around the area and have done catering for the past few years, but the draw back of this profession is that it doesn't pay worth a squat (per hour that is, you can make 75k a year as a head chef, but you are working 60+hrs a week minimum). So I have left that field and am back in school. I hope to end up with a bachelor's degree in history and to become a school teacher. Damn near my whole family teaches, and I guess I was destined for it. I've seen so many people who recognize my last name and ask "was your father a teacher?", and then they go on to tell me about how he was their favorite teacher of all time. How he would engage the students and get them truly interested in the topic, and how he made learning fun is what inspires me to follow in his footsteps.
I hope I haven't bored anyone who reads this to death, as part of this journey required me to divulge some of this information. One positive thing I have is that I have a wonderful girlfriend who treats me better than I deserve. She even brought me a plate of cheese (you know how some women are with chocolate? That is how I am with cheese) and salami tonight while we were hanging out. She is the most supportive person I have ever known and I'm not sure if this would be possible without her there for me.
I also tried to insert a picture for reference, but for some reason the forum won't allow me to post a picture. If someone could help me out I would appreciate it. |

Hello and welcome!
To get technicalities out of the way first: the forum engine does not permit new members to post pictures, as a spam prevention measure (you would not believe the filth bots tried to post here!). If you PM the pictures to me, I'll be happy to paste them into your post in the indicated place (just put a "paste picture here" into your post)...
For encouragement, look up Jonathan (here's his progress thread:http://lowcarbsite.com/forum/jonathan-less-138-pounds-t4530.html and his picture thread: http://lowcarbsite.com/forum/jonathan-last-update-jan-18-2005-t6540.html). He's really a poster boy for Atkins and a living proof it IS possible.
Congratulations on picking the perfect GF! Supportive and loving people are few and far between, so give her my love (AND yours! ) and make sure you keep her. Remember, that on occassion, supportive people need support themselves (and it's usually in the areas you'd never guess. so stay vigilant, LOL!)
If you permit a bit of life advice. Not diet related, so my apologies if I poke my nose into things that are not my business:
Do what you love, not what seems reasonable. You will NEVER be happy with a job that's not right for you. Sometimes, it's better to be a struggling artist than a fat bourgeouis... Having said that, I'd say, give teaching a chance. It may - MAY, not WILL - happen that you love it even more than cooking. Or not. But you will never know unless you try. Still, if it feels wrong, don't stick to it. Open a friggin' hot dog cart. The last thing you want is waking up at 80 and realizing you've wasted your life. *steps off the soapbox*. Seriously, I'm approaching 40 and doing a lot - a LOT - of stock-taking. Plenty of wrong choices, if you don't mind me sayin'.
Anyway, good luck and keep us posted!
PS I removed your test thread, I hope you don't mind. If you DO mind, please repost. ( ) |

Hi Scold!!
I live in the Bay Area too. In the Santa Cruz Mountains. Welcome to the forum. You should read Batlou's thread. He also lost a bunch of weight and it might help you out. You can do it! I lost 40 pounds 18 months ago but gained it back after a year of severe anxiety and stress. Now I am on day six of induction and will get it back off plus some I hope.
Your gf sounds great. It is also great that you are going to be a teacher. I have a three and two year old and I have suddenly realized how important good teachers are going to be for them.
Anyhow, good luck to you. Keep posting!!
