It's good to have you back. Now I have a question for you. I moved to a new gym that also has a lap pool. I remember you talking about swimming for excercise. I consider myself a pretty good swimmer but I lack any type of technique that would allow me to swim for an extended period. I see these old guys in there moving along at a steady pace and they look like they could do it for hours. Anyway, I thought you may know of some training videos or books that could be recommended. Thanks in advance.

Bat!

I used to swim competitively for years so for me it was like s_l_o_w_l_y getting back on a bicycle. I did search swimming on about.com and if you look for begginer there are a ton of articles that should be helpful to you. They have everything from technique to workouts planned for you. I like to combine laps of kicking, and pulling as well as full out swimming. Check it out and see if it is helpful!

Even starting slowly and swimming a couple of laps taking a 30 sec break and starting again should help. After doing that for awhile you will find that you can swim more laps in between and less breaks. I used to swim 50+ laps nonstop but that was a million years ago. For now I can do about 8 laps before I have to take a break.

Practice makes perfect.

Bat... when I was going to the Y they had "personal trainers" for the pool as well as the weight room. You could hire a pool trainer to help you just like you could hire a trainer for the gym. If there's a Y near you, give 'em a call. Just a few sessions should be enough to get you off on the right foot... or flipper...?

Hi Nik!

Wow swimming like that is a really good habit to have- isn't that the #1 best form of exercise? I hate swimming unfortunately. The chlorine bothers me too much.

Well.... Here I am AGAIN. Just about a year from the last time I really really tried to get back in the swing of things. And five lbs shy from my starting weight of 6/08... usually how it goes...

It's good to see some familiar faces around here!!!

I have a good support network again on this side of the screen going as well and I know that I can do this.

Hi, Nik - We haven't met, but I'm Toni and good to meet you! Some of the folks from "back when" are still on the board. I'll bet with your experience on Atkins you've got a lot of good advice for the new folks who joined recently.

Welcome back!

Hi Toni,

Nice to meet you! I am absolutely open to helping anyone if I can.

Tril!

So good to see you!!! I see Kage is around anyone seen LoserLady?

Today was good for me. Other than putting my food together for the day and leaving it on the kitchen counter!!! Doh!!! But I was able to wait until lunch and go grab a salad.

I went on a 2.4mi hike this Sunday with an elevation gain of about 625ft.
Last January I mentioned a 40mile hike that was planned for last July/August. Well I went and we did it. It ended up being about 35miles in 4 days!!! It was hard but so amazing. I am planning on doing it again this summer and doing a ton of hikes until then!!! I still have Rock hard calves from the trip! Very Happy

My Mom turned 50 today!! Woohooo. And I'm totally cool skipping cake!

I'll be back to check in later.

Nik,

Your hiking sounds extremely exhausting. Congratulations on such an undertaking! When you get to your goal, you will be climbing Mt. Kilamanjaro!!

Just checking in. I'm still completely on plan and doing great. Myself and three others have kind of formed our own support group! We have Atkins Family dinner every Thursday switching off who cooks and hike every weekend. It has been awesome and really helps to motivate us all.

Those of you that remember me from before probably remember my best friend Steph from the forum. She passed away in December very unexpectedly and tragically. It's been really hard for me. I know that she would only want the best for me and I'm trying really hard to take charge of my life and myself. We both designed friendship tattoos and had our first session done in November. We had appointments scheduled to get them completed in Dec. And she died the week before. I have my appointment this Wed to get mine finished. I'm excited yet really sad at the same time.

I am physically feeling amazing and you don't realize how much of what you eat on a daily basis effects every aspect of your life. I am already down ten lbs and counting. I'd at least like to lose as much weight as I will be carrying in my pack on this years 35mile hike this August and I know I can do it!

I'll check in again real soon.

Nic

Nik,
I am so glad you are on plan and feeling good. I will keep you in my thoughts and Steph too. I have been thinking about you and wondering how you were.

Enjoy your memories Wednesday. I imagine it will be hard but also life affirming for you? Take care or yourself and your beautiful girl. She must be getting so big now?

Hey cool to see you back. Actually last time you were here you talked alot about swimming I believe and it convinced me to take it up. I now swim 2 or 3 times each week with a goal to swim 100 miles this year. I have so far finished about 15 so I am right on track.

That's terrible to hear about Steph and I wish you and her family well.

Anyway, good to see you posting again and keep us up to date.

Hey all,

Thought I'd check in since it's been a couple of weeks. Still completely on plan and doing great!!! I'm down 15lbs in the last 6 wks and counting. In that same time period I've hiked a smidge under 25miles!! This past Saturday myself and one of the Atkins Family Dinner crew hiked 9 miles in four hours to a remote mining ghost town. It was really cool, but very long!!! My calves still twinge.

My tattoo turned out beautiful. I sat four a little over 3.5 hours and have about one session left to finish up shading and fine line detail. When I'm able to post from an actual computer I will upload a picture.

This Thursday it's my turn to cook for the A.F.D. We will be having pizza made with a cauliflower crust. It's a new recipe so I'll let you know how it turns out.

Bat, that is totally awesome about the swimming. I miss it and hope I'll have an opportunity to get back into it myself.

Nik,

I just want to give you a hug. Keep up the hard work, and I'm glad to see you have your support group to hike with. It makes me want to try and get out in the sunshine more often. It is spring... A time of beautiful weather and new beginnings. Best of luck!
