|
|
Hi, thought I would say hello and introduce myself.
I am a 38 year old mummy to 2 boys and have almost been with my husband for 16 years.
I started on the Atkins diet in June 2007 as my bmi was around 33 and I needed to get it down to below 30 in order for me to commence my dream job as a police office.
Well I managed to lose 25lbs in just under 3 months and got the go ahead from the police doctor. I started my training as a police officer in September 2007. The first 6 months of training was at university, sitting on my backside all day without anywhere to get Atkin friendly food and no fridge to keep food from home.
To cut a long story short I put the weight back on. It is now 2 years later and I am now at the heaviest I have ever been at 206lbs.
I would like to get down to around 154lbs so a whopping 52lbs needs to come off.
Well on 22nd October 2009 I woke up and decided that the day had come to get my ever expanding backside into gear.
Over the last 2 years I had gone up 3 sizes in my police trousers and my latest pair were getting tighter by the day and I knew that I would be too humiliated to get an even bigger pair.
Not only that I could now only get into 1 pair of jeans at home and had to buy some baggy sweat tops as all my blouses were bursting across the chest!
So, after my first week on induction I lost 6lbs which I am really pleased with.
I have not done ANY exercise. This is not through choice, it is because I have a bad knee injury as got injured at work.
I also dont drink hardly any liquid. I never have had all my life. If I have 2 cups of tea or coffee a day that will be my total liquid. I know that this is not healthy whether on or of Atkins so this is something that I am really going to work hard on and really force myself to drink water.
I have read a few posts on here and I am just sooooooooo amazed at how well some lots of you have done on this diet.
I remember when I did Atkins the first time I weighed myself eveyday and this led me to get down hearted when nothing was coming off, so this time I am only weighing myself once a week. Hubby is hiding the scales from me once I have been weighed.
Next weighing in day is this Thursday so will post again then. I plan on staying on induction until at least 20lbs are gone.
Sorry for such a long post. |

Welcome!!!
If the scale discourages you, don't use it. Use your clothes as a better indication of getting smaller.
As for exercise... you can lose without it. A lot. If you REALLY feel the need, do resistance stuff that doesn't involve your knee. You can work your upper body, abs, back and your other leg w/o using one knee!
Please don't wait until you've weighed in to come back and talk... how are we going to get to know you?!? LOL

Thanks for your reply Tril. I have read alot of your posts. You are soooooooo supportive to everyone on here. I have seen your progress pictures as well and you look like a different women!
I am on my 11th day of induction today and am coping well. I am generally only having 2 meals a day though, this is just purely down to being busy with work/family etc. I am not feeling hungry in between meals though so that is great.
My favourite thing is a mug of decaf coffee with sweetners and cream . This curbs my sugar cravings nicely.
Are you near your goal? |

I just KNOW you will do GREAT! I have a great deal of respect for the hard job police do. BTW, I just met a young gentleman police officer here in Richmond, Virginia USA who I sat next to at a luncheon. He saw I was limiting my selections of food, and showed me his drivers' license. He had lost OVER A HUNDRED POUNDS! His picture looked nothing like him! I asked him what HIS secret was and he said, "Internal Motivation."
Once you are committed, it becomes more important than all those temptations. You have a supportive husband and children...the best reasons of all to lose! PLUS, you want to be able to heal your knee and losing pounds helps that as well!
My best to you!

Hi cats,
Just wanted to join in the welcome committee of Tril and merlot our ever present cheering team.
I have found this site and the people on it a godsend when it comes to idea or inspiration and I'm sure you will too, don't worry about the amount you need to lose as you'll soon be looking back and wondering what all the fuss is about.
As you lose it your knee will thankyou for the reduction in stress being put upon it and that will heal quicker as well so its a win win situation for you
I'm here in old Blighty as well (can't believe I put after looking out the window) so if I can help in my limited way don't hesitate to shout
Good luck and keep posting!

hello trees (micky called you cats...so i'm going with trees
look, hey well done on making the decision, and choosing a way of life that won't leave you starving and cranky...not to mention one that actually works. there'll you'll be, with your policeman buddies, chomping on burgers (without the bun of course), and all those other great proteiny-fatty foods that are qu9ite good for us...when not combined with sugar....
i've just had for dinner a sausage-fry - organic sausages, stewed (after cooking) in a can of tomatoes, with cut up green peppers, bit of onion, zucchini, garlic and lots of olive oil mmmm delish! my dh has it with rice, but i jsut eat it in a bowl like a stew.
anyway, so jsut cook as you would for the family, but don't have the potatoes/rice/pasta etc...
good luck, and keep us posted! we love to hear all about successes, frustrations and all that!
TRACY (oops - i keep hitting that capslock button!) |

Thank you all for your replies, already feeling a lot of support from this site.
Yes tomorrow is weigh in day. I have a feeling that I may stay the same, I have been going way over 6 hours between meals over the last few days. I have breakfast of say egg/bacon but then I won't eat again until tea time. To be honest I am just not that hungry.
Today as an example I woke up at 7am and did not eat until 12:00pm when I had a chicken & bacon salad. I then did not until after 6.30pm when I had gammon, egg, brocoli & a bit of salad. Todays intake of fluid was 2 cups of decaf coffee, no water at all. Yesterday I was better with the water and I forced 1500ml down my neck.
Today was a special day for me though as I graduated from university and my husband, children and mum were there to see me. A 38 year old graduate!
Well lets see what the scale says in the morning but even if it stays the same I am still very happy with my 6lb loss in 2 weeks.
I will let you all know.
Can I just ask, can you eat cheeseburgers from macdonalds with the bun? I have had some of these and scrapped the ketchup off as well.
Thanks once again for your kind welcomes. |

Congratulations on your graduation!!! Well done! Nice that you had your family there to share your moment.
Yes, you can have McD burgers... but withOUT the bun. I think that's what you meant, but just to be sure... good idea to take the ketchup off, too. Here we can order them with a bun and without ketchup, too. Can you do that there??
Good luck tomorrow with your weigh in. How did you do with the water today? I can't express how important the water is to losing weight while low carbing.

"Here we can order them with a bun and without ketchup, too"
you meant "withOUT" too, right
ahhhh, burgers without buns....my fave thing to order in a restaurant......one of my favourites, anyway!
CONGRATS ON GRADUATING - THAT IS FANTASTIC!! dang that caps lock button! anyway, i don't mind shouting a congratulations! you deserve it!
yes, please drink water and force yourself to eat. you don't want to put your body into starvation mode and cause it to hold onto bodyfat for survival. even if its just veggies and cream cheese - which is easier to eat when you don't feel at all hungry than a steak. the hunger will come...but you do need to get your body into eating..... oh, and if you do suffer from massive hunger (lots of us do a few weeks in) - just add lots more fat for a while - mayo with your veggies, cream cheese, olive oil...butter, whatever gets you through...it will pass and stabilise...
good luck!

Yes I definately meant WITHOUT the bun .
Well I weighed in yesterday and only lost 1.5lbs but I am still happy as that is 7.5lbs in 2 weeks which is still half a stone and that is 1 of the 8 half stones I need to lose. Only 7 more to go!
Yesterday I ate bette I think. I had bacon, sausage, egg & mushroom for breakfast. I had fish with brocoli and courgette for lunch and then had a piece of gammon on its own for tea as I was not really hungry. Only had 1 glass of water yesterday.
I rearly am trying to drink more water but I am just not used to it.
Well, will try really hard this week on the water front and to eat regular meals.
I thought about buying some of the akins cereal bars which are around 2 net carbs, thought they would be handy to have when I dont get a chance to eat a proper meal rather than have nothing.
Looking forward to weigh in next week.
I think my jeans may be a little looser im not quite sure.
I am still very motivated so that is good.
Off to cook some pork with brocoli, corgettes, onion and some passata etc as I am actually hungry at the moment.
If I was not on atkins I would now be eaten 4 slices of toast with butter and jam and then probably a couple of packs of crisps and maybe a chocolate or two
But.......im not |

wel done! hey - you'll get there re the water...and you'll lose better and feel better too! you really should do your measurement today (TODAY!! because you'll see the difference and that feels sooooo good! Sometimes the scale is a bit of a meanie, so the cms lost will give you a better idea.
hmm, watch the cereal bars - they have those sugar alsohols, which in some people cause insulin spikes and cravings. while you're needing to lose a lot, try just having a chunk of green pepper with cream cheese as your "better than nothing" food (or whatever else you like ) - trust me. also a heck of a lot cheaper, if bar prices there are similar to here!
tracy
ps - whoo-hoo about your jeans! i'm sure they are a bit looser after losing 7.5 pounds! keep it up! |

I, also, am one to have to "remember" water, as I NEVER and I mean NEVER drank water before. Even into my 10th month on Atkins, I have days I forget! Squirt a little bit of lemon in it...helps take the boredom out of it and keep it NEARBY, always, so seeing it reminds you to sip.
So far so good! Keep it up!

Thanks once again for your good advice. I am finding it abit easier to eat regular meals at the moment as I am planning my meals in advance. I have also looked through my atkins cook book for inspiration and I now have herbs in my cupboard which is very unusual.
Looking forward to my bacon this morning with a cup of decaf coffee & cream. Going to have pork chopped into pieces, fried in olive oil with passata, garlic, mixed herbs, brocoli, mushrooms and onions. Yummy.
The only thing I am doing is having more veg than salad. I am having a bit of cucumber here and there but I am still losing so will see how it goes. If I stall then I will try and up my salad and lower my veg a bit.
Yes I must measure myself today. I really should have done it on day 1 but better late than never. |

To my knowledge: It is perfectly OK to play with the mix and match of salad to veggies. I incorporate TONS of veggies INTO my salads.
Just try to have 12-15 grams of your carbs in the "veggie" category, any which way you can get them! Into salads, omelets, as a side, into a dip...however it can work for you! [I think the 2 salads, 1 side was a "suggestion" to help us find a way to make it work!}
If I am wrong, someone will surely correct me (and that's fine too!)
Good luck!!

Nope... you're right Merlot. It doesn't matter how you get your 12 to 15 net grams of carbohydrate from vegetables. It can come from salad greens (it would take a TON of them, btw)... or it can come from traditionally cooked side vegetables. Just be sure the ones you choose are on the Induction foods list, weigh/measure your servings and count the carbs. Don't guess. And try to spread the carbs out over the course of the day... don't have one big bowl of 12 ng of broccoli, for example. That could cause a release of insulin similar to eating three cups of popcorn (12ng carb). |

Thanks.
For breakfast this morning I had 5 small rashers of grilled bacon followed by an onion, green pepper & mushroom omelette with grated cheddar cheese on top.
I made a sunday lunch today for the family, beef, cauliflower cheese, roast potato, mashed potato, yorkshire pudding, brocolli, courgettes and carrots.
I of course did not eat the roast potato, mashed potato, carrots or yorkshire pudding. It was gorgeous even if I do say so myself.
Going to have pork again for tea with mushroom, peppers, brocoli & onion in some passata sauce.
Still really enjoying it an still highly motivated.
Not going to weigh myself again until Thursday as that is weigh in day. |

Im sure my clothes feel looser today and hubby stated i look slimmer from the side view!
Weigh in day tomorrow.
Yesterday I used a 3rd of a jar of passata for a meal and then read later that there is 14g carbs per half jar!
Oh well, wont be doing that again. |

What a GREAT hubby...the "side view" is the worst for most of us! For him to have commented, the change must be really noticeable!
My late husband was totally "tone deaf." I could lose 30 pounds and ask him, "Do I look different?" and he'd say, "Did you get a haircut?"
Truth was, he was just sort of non-observant.
No, the fact he is my "late husband" does NOT mean I killed him (but I swore I would from time to time!) LOL!

mine says "where's all the love gone" -
anyway, he reckons he'll be happy as long as i don't get too slim...no chance of that with these hips (i've had 2 docs say i have a "wide pelvis" hahahah)
don't worry about the sauce - it was a one-off, and now you know!
but don't you hate that???!!!! there's so much i can't have here in aus, cause there's so much sugar. they've got the low-fat nonsense, down, but not the "no sugar"...ah well, maybe someday!

Well, stepped on those scales this morning and I am the same as last week.
I have just weighed myself again some 12 hours later and I am 3 lbs heavier than I was this morning!
I checked the old ketostix and I was a light pink colour yesterday, however usually I am always dark pink, today I am mid pink!
I think upon reflection I was definately eating too much veg.
i have re focused today and have had some salad with my meal and had some water(no water yesterday).
Will remain on track this week and see how I go.
Yesterday I ate 2 Atkins day break bars and had 1 the day before so I guess I am going to have to limit myself to 1 a week. I have 4 boxes of them
Still not started any exercise as I just have not had the time, I know this is another area I need to work on.
As long as my clothes are getting looser I am not worried about the weight. |

yes, indeed - esp at the end of the day i'd always weigh in the morning...after the peeeeee
also your bod may beholding onto the water...could be many reasons you'er the same weight. as you say, as long as you're eating to plan and things are looking good, then you'll be fine. your body will also take breaks every now and again. the worst thing to do is get worried about it. don't let it take over your life. just keep on keeping on and your body will catch up. in the meantime, you get to eat great food, and not be a slave to cravings...watch those bars though...i had a lot of them in my freezer one week (they went on sale), and they called me allllll weeek looooong . if you have to ditch them, go ahead..,that may be a waste, but so is being a slave to them, or haviong them cause a stall) - but of course, if you're fine with them, that that is even better!!!!!!!!!!!
take care, keep up the good work!

And if you are like me, before Atkins, water was a foreign substance, something you boiled pasta in!
I FORCED myself to drink water. Now it is second nature. That really, truly, makes a difference so even if you find you didn't get 64 ounces in, at least try to remember to keep a full glass nearby. I do that at work and find eventually I get a lot more than I expected. One day you will surprise yourself and find you MISS water if you don't have it at hand.
Good luck! You can do this!

In the meantime, have you measured? I am a big NAG on keeping measurement notes.

Hi merlot, well only lost 1lb this week so a total of 9 pounds in my 1st month which I guess is not too bad but not as much as I would have liked.
The only thing keeping me motivated is that my clothes, especially jeans and trousers are getting looser.
I am drinking water everyday, at least 1 ltr(I know it should be more), and I am trying to eat more salad rather than veg.
I will keep plugging away at it. |

Hi, Cats...
You BEAT the average of 2 pounds per week, and I'll bet if you stay on plan, the "Whoosh Fairy" will come by soon and whisk an "unexpected pound" away! [But please do NOT cheat!]
Try to find something you LOVE to keep you interested...I indulged in a little lobster tail with butter!
Good to hear from you. The "looser clothes" are so much more motivating than the scale.
My best to you ... Toni |

Well 196.8 today which is almost 10lbs lost.
Hoping for a visit from a certain fairy this week. I can pull one pair of my jeans off without unfastening the button! And I am not busting out so much across the chest area in some of my blouses!
I have not cheated yet and don't intend to as I need to get healthier not only for my own self esteem but also so I can run around more with my 2 kids. |

Wish the site had a big "ATTA GIRL" for you! That is AWESOME! Remember, the scale may be fickle, but the tape measure (and the way your clothes fit) is your friend!
Just keep enjoying the variety you CAN have, the fact you NEVER have to be hungry, and I guarantee, the weight WILL come off and your body will "sculpt" itself to that trimmer you! I am one without so much at the top or the bottom but a true APPLE, all in the middle. I have lost so much off my abdomen and waist, it is truly wonderful!
You'll do GREAT!

this is how i feel because another week has gone by and i am still the same weight as i was 2-3 weeks ago.
this is how i feel because my clothes are looser.
Now, as happy as I am about the looser clothes I still want those damb scales to move just a little bit so i am going to record on here each day exactly what I eat if that is ok.
26 November 2009
6am - grabbed an atkins daybreak bar and munched it on the way to work.
drank 750ml of water by 12 midday.
2pm - ate a large bit of grilled gammon with some mushrooms, red onion and courgettes all fried in butter with a fried egg on top.
2 cups of decaf coffee with 1 splenda sweetner in each and some double cream to taste.
350ml of water by 4pm. Just nibbling on some prok scratchings as we speak.
Totally stuffed and probably wont feel like eating again today but will try and have some cucumber and celery slices with some mayonaise around 7pm.
Oh I have had 1 thin slice of cheddar cheese.
Of course immediately looking at this I see that I went 8 hours without food but to be honest I was a) too busy to eat and b)was not hungry.
I will be aiming to drink at least another 450ml of water brining my total water for today to 1 and a half litres.
Any comments on the above would be appreciated.
Thanks Merlot and everyone for your continued support. |

hiya cats!
you're right - too long between meals, and not enough food! truly, you must eat!
and...maybe skip the daybreak bars? they can cause some people to insulin-spike, so that right there may be the issue if you eat the atkins products regularly. if not, ignore that!
if you want a quick brekkie on the run, try tuna salad in celery. that can be eaten on the drive i reckon then you get your protein etc without the sugar alcohols. always have some protein with your meals/snacks as well.
it IS hard to eat when you're not hungry isn't it? i've been strugglng with that myself a bit lately - had some stress a couple weeks back and just could. not. eat! But i'm a bit better now at least!
keep posting so we have a better idea - one day is only one day, and i should have probably waited to see a couple days - so, sorry if all my advice was unnnecessary!! lol

tracey, thanks for your observations. I am trying not to eat the atkins bars but the chocolate chip one satifies my sugar snack craving sooooooo well. Must try hard to limit myself to 1 a week. I would throw them away but my mum gave me 4 boxes bless her,
Yes, 8 hours between meals is not good I know.
Will be making a big effort today and will post todays menu as tonght.
Just to finish yesterday off I has 3 slices of cold roast beef with some cucumber slices and mayonaise. Very yummy.
I am still not doing any exercise so this is an area I really need to work on but I am just blimin lazy |

OK, I'm from the US and would LOVE to get an idea about what are:
Gammon...passata...courgette. I now know "jelly" is like "jello", but pray tell are the other dishes? I would LOVE to know!
Hope things are going GREAT for you. My best...Toni |

Ok, let me try and explain.
Gammon - it is meat from a pig, abit like bacon except that is it thicker, you cook it before eating it. It's lovely.
Passata - this is just sieved tomatoes
Courgette - this is a vegetable, it looks like a cross between a cucumber and a Aubergine.
Well todays weight is 194.2 lbs so hopefully things are starting to work for me.
Yesterday meals:-
Breakfast, 4 slices of grilled bacon, 1 fried egg, fried mushrooms & 1 fried tomato.
Lunch(on the go) 1 double cheeseburge from macdonalds, NO bun and scrapped off the ketchup, onion & pickle(yuk).
Supper(visiting relatives), 2 slices of ham, corn beef, chicken, 5 small sticks of celerey, 4 baby tomatoes, some lettuce, cold boild egg, tiny bit of coleslaw, cucmber slices,3 mini cocktail sauseges, 5 tiny pickled onions.
Only about 350ml of water

Thanks for the lesson in UK cuisine! Sounds like a pretty good menu there. Never know what went into the coleslaw, but if it had sugar, you only had a little. You can't go up to the person and grill them on their ingredients! Bad form!! LOL!!
So sounds good! I wish you the best!

Hi cats!
Any interest in walking? When the weather was warm and while on Daylight Savings Time (added 1 hour of daylight) I walked a mile every night and got to love it!
Now that it is pitch dark when I get home from work, I can't do that, so I am trying to get interested in walking "indoors" at home with some walking videos on u-tube. Also, taking stairs at work when I have to go between departments, avoiding the elevator (hard for me, so I KNOW it is "exercise".) I hate to drive at night, so a gym is out.
I empathize!
But you have lost OVER 2 pounds per week, which beats the conventional wisdom! Good luck!

Hi All,
Just wanted to throw this in there about exercise. When I can't walk for whatever reason I find that good workout with light dumbells will help. This king of workout can be cardio if you do your reps with only a minute to rest in between each one. A dumbell workout will help upper body tone and raise heart rate to cardio levels. Hope that knee gets better with your weight loss.

Hi all, long time since I have been on here. Currently on a 3 week driving course so not had a chance to catch up.
The great thing about this course is that nearly everyday we are eating out at roadside cafes so having bacon, egg, mushrooms etc.
Weight loss has been slow but still coming down slightly over the last 4 weeks, but only a 4lbs loss in these 4 weeks.
Starting weight on October 22nd 2009 206lbs
Yesterdays weight 184lbs so 22lbs lost so far.
A couple of people who have not seen me for a while comented on how I look and my smaller trousers are getting lose so I will soon be into my smallest work trousers which are 3 sizes smaller than the ones I used to be in.
Just goes to show that it is not all down to the amount of weight you lose.
I tried my swim suit on the other day and for the forst time in a long time I felt that I could perhaps go to my local swimming pool and would not feel ashamed if I saw someone I knew. |
