Total Belt Notches: 30 Twisted Evil Happy happy, Joy Joy. Smile

Age: 32 Wink

Starting Weight: 410 pounds

Current Weight: 272 pounds

Total Loss So far: 138 pounds

Goal: 230, Who knows... My mucles are definately growing. Confused

Want to see before and during snapshots of me? Very Happy Look Here! Wink

Medical Condition: High Uric Acid, since march or so. Other then that I'm Apparently quite healthy. Very Happy

Medication: Since early May 2004 - Allopurinol for High Uric Acid

Previous attempts: A few... Weight Watchers about 15 years ago I Lost 20. Since then well life has been complicated.... drug addicted most of my life, low self esteem, etc... So I really never gave another diet a real attempt, perhaps a soup diet here and a soup diet there only lasting a few days at a time.

A few, years ago... I finally checked my self in to rehab for a Cocain addiction. Quickly screwed that up, for a short time... and am now proud to say, I have been drug free for about a year. I quite smoking cigerettes 10 days ago (something i have been considering for a few months). I have quit smoking for 3 years, once before... So I'm pretty confident i got that licked for at least another 3 years. Wink

Triggering factor that caused me to loose weight? Well for starters I'm 410 friggin pounds. Also, so much of my life has been in turmoil, wrapped up in family bullcrap, guilt, cold-heartedness, emotional abuse, childish behavior. My best friends are all drug addicts or alcholics or both, I was in my own mind and in reality to some extent the glue that held us all of us together. Unfortunately, I just could never really deal with everyone elses problems and my own as well. So a life long drugged-out existance began when i was 14.

One, of my best friends of 20 years(male) has just hit rock bottom or at least you would of hoped so. The poor, guy could never really see the truth behind his well made lies. He, has never held a job in his life, and is now a crack, daylota, morphin, junkie... who ended up owing so much money, he was forced in prostitution, to pay it off or die. At this point everyone has basically turned there backs on him, including myself... becaues he still does not want to think he has a problem. Dealing with him on a daily basis was literally killing me, well I watched him dying. What I'm trying to say, is I took the emotional guilt that he brought into my life and put it down, and just let it go. It's up to him now where ever he might be.

My immediate Family has all moved to Ottawa, and I haven't had to deal with our family bullcrap for almost a 1.5 years.

So now most of the bullcrap in my life is gone... I'm working making decent money. I don't do drugs. I don't smoke. I don't drink (specially now that im on adkins). Whats, next? Do I want to sit around the appartment, being a fat slob who doesn't exercise, and hates himself and who he is? Or do I want to continue to change.

I choose, change. Its hard to love someone, if you obviously don't love yourself. I don't want to die alone, miserable and morbidly obese. I just have to take it one step at a time, and not care so much what others think.

Just a quick(maybe not so quick) after thought.

I started the diet on Monday February 16, 2004.

But was not able to weight myself, until I got 2 good quality scales to stand on(1 foot per scale). So last night I weighed in at he 410 pounds mentioned above.

Day 0 - Ketones none.
Day 2 - Ketones slight or small amount
Day 3 - Ketones Medium

I also took all my measurements before the diet on sunday.

I keep track of everything I eat, counting carbs as well as fat protein and calories in a excel work sheet.

Typical morning so far would be:

2 egg omelette with
1 to 1.5 ounce of chedder cheese.
.5 to 1 cups of fresh whole mushrooms.
3 strips of bacon on every other day.

followed by, EFA suppliment and a multi-vitamin. I also have a 8 fl oz glass of Sugar free, dietary Fiber, after breakfest and after supper to help keep me regular, as well as keep me feeling full.

Typical Lunch:

1 170 gram can of Tuna packed in Water.
1 or 2 leafs of Romaine Lettuce.
1 to 1.5 ounce of chedder cheese.

Typical supper:

1 cup cabbage

or

1 cup of salad (lettuce and a bit of mushrooms)
1 ounce of chedder cheese ( for the salad )
2 Tablespoons Kraft Creamy Ceaser (appx. 0.6 carbs per spoonfull i believe)

and

6-8 ounces of skinless/boneless chicken thighs done in a goerge foreman. I think my favorite.

or

6 ounce Prime rib.

or

7 ounce eye of round steaks

etc.

Typical daily intake of calories. 1279 - 2204(6 oz prime rib for supper and lunch) depending on selection. My Average since Prime rib day is 1550 Calories per day.

Also like to say I'm on a 1279 calorie day today, cause i haven't felt hungry yet. Not that i want to feel hungry, its just i want to know how much it will take not to feel hungry.

Exercise: At my weight and with my fear of public eyes scrutinizing me, walking is not something I'm ready to do yet. However I have just ordered a Home Gym, that I have earlier searched the entire web for that can support my weight. I don't mind lifting weights, or at least i didn't long ago in my past. I would of most liked to get an eliptical trainer... except i would need to spend at least 3000 dollars to get one to support my weight, same applies to treadmills and bikes unfortunately. I hope none of this sounds like an excuse not to exercise... becaues I am really looking forward to lifting alot of reps of smaller weights to get the heart pumping.

Okay, i have said enough... please feel free to support me Very Happy

Frog--> An old friend of mine used cocaine and ended up being over 300lbs. I dont' understand it either. But I think it's heroin that makes you skinny...... could be wrong though (not a big knowlegde of drugs other than person experience from the college days)

Welcome and good luck! Very Happy

I've been overweight my entire life and I am making steady progress on Atkins. It really works! I know you can do it!

As for exercise I totally understand. I used to be really embarrassed to get out and do anything. I was afraid of what people thought. One thing that worked for me was working with a personal trainer who worked out of her home. You could get private sessions or work out with just a couple of other people. There were never more than 3 people there at a time.

Being able to do that, for me, eventually led to me being able to go to the gym without fear. I knew many different exercises I could do and that took a lot of pressure off.

Another thing that worked for me in college was walking after dark. I would just walk around campus a few times which was pretty well lit, but I felt like no one was watching me.

The home gym sounds like a great idea too! I also really want an elliptical trainer for my home, but I can't quite afford one yet.

Exercise videos are another thing you can do in the privacy of your own home. I've never been too fond of them for some reason, but you might love them. I also haven't looked for a long time and Tae Bow seems interesting.

Keep us posted, drink your water and take your vitamins! Smile

Early morning (before everyone wakes up) is another good time for walking. For me, it's not so intimidating as at night.

At night, I'd come across parties and drunks and cars that blow their horns and scream.

In the morning, the only people out are walkers, runners and dog walkers. The only cars are people going to work. It's like a whole different world. You start to see the same people.

Jonathan,

Welcome to the forum! I just want to say how truly inspirational your story is... and I just can't wait to see your progress and how you do on this "way of eating".

1279 calories seems pretty low to me, though you did say you get up to 2204 sometimes. 1550, your average would seem to be a good count as your low end to me. Anyways, this is Atkins and you shouldn't have to count calories... concentrate on 20 g's of carbs and feeling satiated and you'll do fine. Remember, fat is our friend and to burn it off we need to eat it.

Looks like you got into ketosis quickly enough but don't let it bother you if you are at small or trace at times since it seems that being in ketosis is the goal, not how dark we make the ketostrips.

I look forward to seeing you progress and don't hesitate to ask questions. Good luck! thumb

Thanks for the good Advice on walking Strife and PattyC... What I have done, the last 2 days may sound a little strange.

Thursday Night

I went to Costco to buy Boneless/Skinless Chicken thighs, and I walked as fast as I could manage, around the entire store and up and down just about every isle. Mind you I walked past a lot of sample tables... and a lot of terribly high carb foods. I didn't try any or buy any though Wink . I certainly had my heart rate up for at least a good 25 minutes or so.

Friday Night

I went to the local, Grocery Store to buy some Omega 3 eggs and a pound of butter. Which were about in the same place... but it didn't stop me from walking like a bat out of hell around the entire store, and finally through the parking lot. Next time though, I'll have to be more careful I just about flipped on my head on a patch of Ice. Smile Good news, I was a sweat'n.

I wonder if people see me and think hmmm must be a wacko. Laughing I guess it can seem strange, someone who is loosing weight to go for walks in the very belly of Satan. The way I see it though it’s a good opportunity. Also, the ground is flat in stores... no hills... And at my weight the slightest hills can down right devastate me. On the down side, I don't think I'm going to do to much walking outside just yet, I live in the most San Francisco like place in the whole City, plus there is 3 inches of slush on the road ways. I guess I'm just making excuses.

Today is Saturday.

I'm up, had breakfast.
2 egg omelet with
1/4 cup brussel sprout (trying to slowly use my pre diet supply up)
1/2 cup mushrooms
1 ounce of cheese

And I'm going to turn on the tunes, and proceed to some vigorous and intensive house cleaning. Oh and after that, I'm going to find out why its taking so darn long for my exercise equipment to get here. Sad

Thank again Everyone.

For a second there I thought Lexi said "break dance" and I was like..."you go girl!" Smile

Jonathan -- A goal might be to work up to 20 minutes of cardio, I think I've read that anything under 15-20 minutes doesn't affect weight loss as much. But anything is ALWAYS better than nothing. Just wanted to give you that tip so you get the most bang for your buck.

Oh, also, you might look into getting a heart monitor; they are really helpful. At your weight walking as fast as you can actually might get your heart rate going too high.

I forget how to calculate your target heart rate but I bet someone here knows how to do that. I know mine is around 170.

All that said, you are doing great! Keep it up!

Max heartrate is 180 minus your age. Your target is some percentage of that, depending upon your fitness level. You do not want to get to the max, maybe 60% of it.

I used to work in a mall. They'd open early just for walkers. It's a nice big indoor place to walk in. Costco is pretty big, too, but I'd go broke Wink

I'm Extremely happy to announce I lost another 9 pounds this week. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Things are really starting to look up.

When I last checked in, I mentioned that I went for a walk. Well since then I went from .5 miles to 1 mile to 2.5 miles. I now walk 1.5 miles every morning before work and on the weekend around 6:00am and another Mile when I get home from work.

I purchased a Timex/heart rate monitor combo, and now time my walks and my heart beat regularly. I'm happy to report that I am already shaving minutes off my daily morning ritual as well as lowering my Average Heart rate.

To top it all off, I just received my Home Gym I ordered over 2 weeks ago. After tomorrow I should have that setup. I decided to still walk every morning, but alternate lifting weights and walking in the evening.

I have read a lot on this site, and am trying hard to get it through my head that weight loss will drastically slow down. But I'll take the big numbers while I can. I was so pleasantly surprised today, because I figured I was sucking up water again, and building a lot of muscle in my legs over the last week.

Fears at this point...? I fear I will get discouraged when the weight loss stops. I fear I am doing way too much way to fast. I must stay the course... If I do I KNOW I WILL BE NEAR OR AT MY GOAL BY MAY 23RD 2006.

Thanks everyone for the support, I very much appreciate it.

You're doing great young man! bounce Congrats.

Have you tried writing down your goals and reading them every day? That helps me to stay focused. Also they say that doing something repetitively for 2 or 2 weeks makes it become a habit.

Continued success.

I love your attitude man. It keeps me pumped.

I'm feeling the same way about my upcoming first stall. I've lost about 15 pounds in my first two weeks. I'm digging that trend and don't want it to stop!

And like I said in your other post, have a great time with that home gym.

Personally, I like to walk at night, in the dark. But the winter's cold and dry air takes a toll on my asthma, so I've been walking inside.

I have to say, I have found my local YMCA (do you have those in Canada?) to be a friendly supportive place. Not too many hard bodies and a lot of wide bodies... I don't recall ever seeing anyone look at me twice on the track or in the pool. (I started this WOE on 1/7...at 416, so I know where your coming from!)

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS on taking control over your life and getting healthy. I imagine food has been a comfort for you over the years, like other substances. I sincerely hope this WOE provides you with the energy and health you deserve.

Yep, preparing to slow down is a good thing, my first week was 17 lbs down, then 7 the next week, now I'm down to probably 3-4 lbs a week, still very happy with that, just had to prepare myself for not losing 7 lbs a week. Congrats on your attitude, whenever you feel down come to the site, its a great pick me up.

Gym is Set-up as of this morning. Very Happy

Good thing too, cause it was a blizzard yesterday which turned to freezing rain overnight. Which of course led to a tonne of slush and ice and crap on the roads. Which means I'm not walking today for the first time in a 10 days.

Plus, the ball of my right foot is really aching and making funny noises. Hope I didn't damage anything. Oh, well one way or the other I'm going to burn some calories.

Well done getting it set up, take it easy and slow.. or you'll ache the day after. Remember to stretch when your finished.

Hope ur foot gets better with a couple of days rest too.

Well done with your progress (I too love ur bubbly outlook).

Very Happy

Great to hear the gym is up and running. That must have been no small feat to put together. Hope your foot is on the mend -- I wonder if you pulled something?

just don't burn out of this too quick. It's a long slow steady process., which if you keep this up will have some GREAT results in the end.

Jonathan,
Haven't been into the forum for a couple of weeks so this is the first of me reading your thread. I just wanted to say "well done" for deciding to take control of your life. I started this WOE at 441lbs just 6 months ago and I'm now sitting at 354lbs. The only consistent exercise I've done is walking so it just shows that walking along with Atkins does work.

Like others have said, don't get discouraged when your weight loss slows down or you have a stall. I had a couple of stalls a couple of months ago and I'm going through another one just now. If I start to feel discouraged I come straight into this forum and I'm soon back on track again. Just be patient and you will get the results you want.
Good luck.

Well... Sad

I was prepared for weight loss to slow down, but I wasn't prepared to gain 3 pounds. Crying or Very sad

No big deal though, just kinda a sucks butt ya know?

However I know I've been doing everything right, and thats the main thing.

---I'm walking daily.
---I have started weight training program.
---I have not once cheated, not even close.
---I have eaten an average of 1650 calories per day.
---I drink a minimum of 3 litres of water a day and have proper pee color Embarassed
---I have been in the second darkest Ketostix color steadily.
---I take a good multivitamin, Calcium/magneseum, and EFA tablets daily.
---I don't eat 4 ounces a cheese a day. Wink

So what the heck do you think happened?

Have I sucked up that much water since last Wednesday?
Have I gained that much muscle since last Wednesday?
Is my scale all screwed up?
Combination of all of the above?

All I can say is this better not happen next week, cause It might get me discouraged. But for now, I'm cool... but also a little peeved. Confused

Hey, you were losing 9 pounds per week, which is pretty high. Maybe it's just leavening out a bit. I can easily gain 3 pounds in a day.

You'll be fine.

Well, I'm certain some of it is definately muscle. I walked today, and every time out its easier, I practically jogged on the home stretch.. well not really, but I was bootin it, and jumping over icy patchs, my legs never bothered me a bit. When i Started walking a half Mile would cause my calfs to burn and ache.

It, could well be the scales too that are messed I can never get the same reading on them twice just getting off of them and back on.

I'm sure I will be fine, after all I sure could be doing worse things with my body right? Thanks patty.

Lexi, I planned originally to measure myself once every 4 weeks. The first time I measured myself was on Feb 23. I think I'll measure myself next wednesday and do it every 4 weeks from then on. The thing about the measuring is its pretty hard to do, when your so big... how much did I relax myself last time, how hard did I pull the tape? But I'm sure I will see improvements.

Thanks for the support. Wink

I think you're doing great. You seem to be battling several "demons" over a short period, but for some reason, I just know you'll succeed.

I started taking my health seriously a couple of years ago. I wanted to "fix" myself; mind, body and soul. I started reading more, exercising regularly and going to church Wink I was fortunate that I married and settled down before doing any damage to myself. My partying stopped when the kids came. I found that simply "not" doing the bad stuff wasn't enough. If I was to be a roll model and healthy for my kids, I had to make some changes.

Anyway, in reading your story, you seem to have reached the same sort of "epiphany" where it's just time to make the changes. I know you'll do well, and always look forward to hearing your progress.

I'll have to agree with Lexi's Omi. You are probably building muscle.

Don't sweat it, you are doing great Very Happy
