I am getting bamboozled with info about how much protein i can eat
is there a scale of protein to weight i can eat on Atkins ,i love meat ,
why i ask is just been reading on net that .8gm per kg weight is recommended ,in that case my protein intake is only say 94 gm ,to me that would be starvation I know it says in book till full but can we over do the protein
sorry if this is a nutty question
also this time of year here very hot and sweating a lot, pouring water in what would you take to stop cramps in legs

many thanks

Hey David

People more expert than me will confirm but I think you can eat as much protein as you want ... but it should be what you need to fill you up rather than eating for the sake of it.

On the cramps, I read a thread which I can't now find which said you need to take Calcium, Pottassium and Magnesium - it has worked for me and also helped with my energy levels.

Good luck

David,
I think a lot will depend on what stage of Atkins you're in..I'm no expert either..but I'm pretty sure that the protein you can eat during the induction stage is un-limited...just eating enough to feel full...
If you don't have THE BOOK....try going down on the page to where it says to "select a forum" and go to the induction phase...a lot of good information is there...
This forum has given me waaaaay more information that I got from reading the book from cover to cover...the people here really care..I'm sure someone, who knows more than I do, will show up soon to give you more of an answer...
Am curious as to where you are...seeings as it's hot and you're sweating a lot..I'm in California and it's raining and super windy and cold out right now...
Anyway....welcome...stick with it....and keep posting...

Hi David.... you asked if you can overeat protein (meat). In a word, yes... IF you are eating beyond satisfying your physical hunger. If you're eating 12 to 15 net grams of vegetables a day, it will be harder to overeat your protein choices. If you're not eating the veggies you will be able to eat more protein (that is NOT a good thing).

The final "test" is... are you losing weight? If you're following the plan and you're losing weight then you're doing okay. If you're not losing, and you feel you might be overeating meat... double check the veggie consumption, get the water in and see if that doesn't naturally reduce your protein intake and spur weight loss.

There are all kinds of opinions and a formulas online for how much protein your body needs. Use that if you need to... I would suggest that you go to ProteinPower.com and read about protein requirements there. Dr Eades has a formula in his book... check out his blog. He's REAL. And he understands this stuff and can explain it in terms everyone can understand. IMHO, he's the "go to" person for anything regarding low carb diets.

David,
Like I said before..."beer, YUCK"....But HOMEMADE ice cream? Now you're talking......Ice cream has been my drug of choice for as long as I can remember...In times of stress it was always there...If I really thought about it I could probably attribute at least 1/2 of my extra weight to my ice cream habit alone...It was nothing for me to go through an entire half
gallon of the stuff in one sitting...

SO.........The biggest surprise, for me, on this WOE is the fact that even though my son occasionally has ice cream in the freezer I haven't been tempted to even sample any of it...It's kind of like once I started eating healthy a switch in my brain shut off...and ice cream has become a thing of the past...

Don't get me wrong...my sweet tooth (swear it's in the genes) is still alive and well....but there are so many "legal" ways to deal with it that
the desire for sweets no longer controls me...I control it....geeeeez I love Atkins.....

Glad to hear that you're still eating well and losing...Keep us posted...

Lynn

I, too, missed beer and wine, but I totally gave them up for the first 6 months. When I added Mich Ultra and wine back in, I stalled (maintained.) Why? Who drinks just ONE beer?

I eliminated alcohol and started losing again. Now, less than 3 pounds from goal, I only have ONE when I am out to dinner; none at home.

Took a great deal of "good self talk" to get past the change in lifestyle, but guess what? I now have a NEW lifestyle...it just takes some time and determination...then it really becomes second nature.

Good luck!

Toni,
Congrats on being SO close to goal....That is absolutely fantastic....

I've been working on just maintaining at 40 lbs down for about two weeks now...not feeling any rush to start losing again...not sure why, as I still have at least 100 lbs to lose....guess I'm feeling the need to coast a while until my body catches up with my brain..or is that the other way around???

Am still eating legal........The good habits that I've formed are alive and well...So I KNOW I'm in no danger of going backwards and re-gaining any of what I've lost...

Maybe it's the fact that right now I'm focusing more on other areas of my life?

Who knows ???

Lynn... I think you're being very smart about your weight loss!!! Losing from your body faster than from your "mind" can make maintenance all that much harder. Take your time, enjoy the ride!

David,
Glad to hear that you're still here with us...My losing has slowed down a bit too...but I think it's from me just "coasting" for a while...Every now and then life just sort of slips in and demands my attention elsewhere and I go through a period where I'm not as focused on my eating as I need to be..So I slip into sort of a maintaining routine...

The first time I tried Atkins I was all gung-ho and determined to lose it all as fast as I possibly could...went stricter than strict and lost 65 pounds in 3 months time..but just as soon as I reached my "goal" I went back to my old routines and ended up gaining back those pounds and a couple dozen more..I figured it was just another diet that didn't work...

This time...has proven to be SO much different...maybe because I'm older...not sure...but everything has just clicked into place...I finally
"GET IT"...For me, it's no longer how fast or even how much I lose...it's
me finally learning to control food instead of it controlling me..It's such
a liberating thing...I no longer feel like I have to be first in the race...lose more and lose it faster than someone else...but am learning to be less like the hare and more like the tortoise..."slow and steady, wins the race"

Sorry....didn't mean to jump up on my soapbox and start a speech..

You're right about not putting the weight on overnight...it sure seems that way sometimes though..Stick with Atkins and it won't take
"years" to lose it...Are you exercising? I find that even 15-30 minutes of getting up off my rear-end seems to help with the losing..Keep posting
I'm rooting for you.....

I'm rootin' for ya too, David! My son is a big protein eater, and he is losing very well on Atkins! It just takes time and the body does what it wants to...decides to take a breather for a while, but eventually...whoosh!!
