Hello Friends.
I started Atkins a mere two days ago on Sunday, July 4 2004. I moved to Atkins after 6 weeks on the South Beach Diet. It was low carb but not low enough to take away the cravings. I lost about 2.5 kilo doing that.
I am 5 foot 4 inches (mommy of 4) and when I started I weighed 93.9 kilo (206.6 lbs)
I didn't take any measurements yet. I did take blood tests but don't have the answers yet.
Well, today I got on the scale and I have lost 2 kilo (4.4 lbs) in 2 days!!! OMG. I haven't been hungry or craving and this protein business is really terrific. IT WORKS!!!!! I can't wait to start looking different like some of the before and after pictures I have seen here. |

Hi Batyaboo, Welcome. I would really encourage you to measure soon. I haven't and now wish I had. I think it would have helped me out during the times I seem stuck. I 'measure' by my clothes but I think now a tapemeasure would have been more encouraging! I think you'll like it here. Carol |

Thanks.
Hey Bliss Pirate - my triglycerides went down after 6 weeks on the South Beach Diet and I was eating plenty of carbs in yogurt, legumes etc. The thing about triglycerides is that the minute you STOP eating sugar, they go waaaaaay down. They're still too high, though, so I hope Atkins does right by me... |

Well, whoever is looking for inspiration don't look over here
I got on the scale this morning and it showed 202.6 pounds. That's only a half a pound down from last week. AUGHHHHHH!
So, I've been doing Atkins for 3 weeks now and have lost a grand total of **drum roll** 4 pounds!!!!!!!
How's that for slow?
I am not giving up, however. I eat well on Atkins and don't go hungry and at least I'm losing and not gaining
I hope next week I'll have happier news to report. |

I am not sure if I welcomed you yet....WELCOME!!!
have u posted your menu? i am curious to see what your eating. maybe there are some hidden carbs or something. Are you also posting your food intake on fitday or the atkins website?
all in all, your still doing good. You are losing right? much better than gaining.
wishing you the best of luck,

Tonya right post a menu maybe there is something you need to cut out.
4 lbs really isn't to bad, remember it didn't go on over night don't expect it to come off over night plus the slower you lose the longer it will stay off.
Good luck. |

I've also understand that some people just didn't have a lot of excess water to lose to begin with. That means your first 2 weeks, won't be as spectacular as others. But on the other hand that means.. that you can still loose consistantly over the long haul.
But share with us if you like, were here to help hammer things out.
And thanks so much for you kind pm.. the other day. |

Thanks Guys.
Here's a snapshot of a typical day:
Breakfast: 2 eggs with one ounce yellow cheese (0.2 carbs per 3 ozs) fried in BUTTER (yum). 1/2 cup decaf with cream.
mid morning snack: hard boiled egg and an ounce of hard cheese
lunch: salad - lettuce, celery, tiny bit red pepper and 1 -2 small cukes with homemade mayo dressing (again yum).
snack: egg or 1 oz. cheese
dinner: 1/4 chicken or 1-2 turkey legs or nice steak with salad and dressing again.
Sometimes I "cheat" and have one cup of coffee with whole mild during the day.
Once a week I'll splurge and have about 5 grams worth of dietetic popsicle.
Twice a week I eat 2 slices of very low carb bread (1.1 grams per slice).
Whoops - I forgot to mention the main part of lunch - usually a portion of fish fillet or tuna or some other good protein
That's it Folks
I don't gorge on anything, but I will admit, that unlike some of you that "never get hungry and forget to eat" I NEVER forget to eat and I DO get hungry, just usually not voracious (good word, huh?) |

Well, I weighed myself this morning. Down 600 grams (1.32 pounds) from last week. It's actually double what I lost last week. Go figure. I am currently on about 25 grams per day of carbs.
My weight is currently 201.3 lbs.
I don't know why it's coming off so slowly!!! But, hey, I can't complain. At least it's coming off and that's with tons of mayonnaise daily.
I measured and I think about 1 centimeter came off various places. Not too impressive.
That's it for today. |

Hey Batyaboo!
I've been reading your posts and decided I'd have a go at trying to guess why it's coming off so slow.
Even though lowering your carbs can lower your calories...you can always find something low carb with tons of calories. After going to a calorie counter and calculating your menu, the highest number of calories you consume is 1,273...which isn't bad for weightloss. Generally doctors say 1200, but under 1300 really isn't that big of a difference.
Watch the low carb bread, especially on induction. Just the slightest baked goody can throw you completely off in this sensitive stage.
You might want to try eating a few more carbs from veggies, because it doesn't seem like your getting much. Your body might be holding onto what it can get and not enabling you to lose.
Also, what is your workout regimine like?
Hope I'm of some help!

Great reply Micky -- you have a great way of explaining things!
Batyaboo -Your statement is critical to understanding Atkisn "But, hey, I can't complain. At least it's coming off and that's with tons of mayonnaise daily. "
The point of trying low carb for me was to STOP starving myself -- I used to put on weight just by looking at foods. It occured to me that it was WHAT I was eating as well as the amount I was eating that was getting my into trouble. When I don't eat I get light headed, headaches and veryvery cranky! To be able to eat and not gain weight was a great relief for me. As for the weight loss -- it is very very slow with me, but that's not why I eat low carb. I eat low carb so I can feel satisfied and not gain weight. |

ok Mickey and Northern Lady, here's the deal - I don't undereat veggies, I think. My salads usually have 2 cups of lettuce, 1/4 cup pepper, a stalk of celery, a very small cuke and sometimes 3 cherry tomatoes. Or sometimes a drop of purple cabbage. My workout regime sucks. I have recently gone back to work so I don't have my twice weekly excercise classes. BUT, I joined a gym this week and already went twice and spent about 30 minutes cycling/treadmilling. Also, every Friday I go to water aerobics. So, I'm not sedentary although I could afford to do more. But it ain't gonna hapen, what with a full time job and 4 children ages 6 months to 9 years old I'm really juggling alot. And now I get to be on this GREAT diet where I have to actually COOK for myself all the time Another new activity to fit in lol. And I MEAN lol. This is no easy feat...
Bythe way, I'm also drinking and peeing all day.
Thanks for your efforts and support!!! |

Batyaboo,
I hear you about the peeing part. LOL! I feel like I spend a fourth of my day on the toilet!
You probably just have a really high metabolic resistance. It's entirely possible.
Just stay really committed to those workouts! But you're working out even w/o going to the gym, because of your 4 kids!!!

Well, I'm back posting in the progress thread. After a short pregnancy, miscarriage, bad back, binging etc. I am officially back in induction for the past almost 2 weeks. I didn't get a chance to weigh myself when I started but today I got on the scale and saw the numbers 91.8 (kilo) - almost 203 lbs. So, I'm not much worse off than before I went into the funk. The thing is, I was hoping to have dropped during the past week and a half.
Ok, so life's not totally perfect. I guess I just have to persevere and it will start to go off. I would really like to get below 90 kilo and start working towards 80.
I hope to have some good results to post here soon!!! |

Good luck with your reinduction. Sorry to hear about the miscarriage, I know that they are emotionally rough (I had many before dd). Hope you have someone to talk to. Your body is probably adjusting now. You retain a lot more water when pregnant due to the hormones.
Good luck. |

Well, I am sort of back on track. I am on my 5th sugar free day. Not strict Atkins, but low carbing nonetheless. (maybe sort of SBD'ing). I eat mostly protein and veggies, but also put lentils in my soup, eat chickpeas and also yogurt sometimes. I reckon I'll slide back into Atkins as soon as I can seriously get the sugar out of my system.
I joined the gym over a week ago and I think I was there 4 times this week. Have been advised by my endocrinologist to workout 5 times a week for 30 minutes. Good for my insulin, he says.
Anyway, I weighed myself at the gym this week and weighed about 92 kilo. I hope the numbers start to go down soon. I've been hovering around the same weight for months (because I've been CHEATING!).
Here's to low carb and exercise!! |

I'm still here, although no real progress to report.
I started induction again about a week ago. I held out for 4 days and then POW. Started in on carbs again. I don't know what it is with me. But, you know me. I never give up. So, I get up in the morning and try again. I have been feeling very sick today (probably from my birth control pill that may just have to go). I'm weak, nauseous with stomach issues. It's pretty awful. So, I'm not beating myself up about not sticking to anything. As soon as I feel better I'll get started again.
In the meantime, I have been working out at the gym almost every day!!! Trying to do a minimum of 30 minutes aerobics 5 days a week. I am very proud of myself for sticking to that regimen at least.
My weight is still about 91 or 91.5 kilo. I think the exercise keeps me from gaining even when I cheat.
Oh yeah, for the record I am going to post my current blood results. I took blood tests because I've been feeling so cruddy.
Total Cholesterol - 176
HDL 38
LDL 81.7
Triglycerides 282 (all the sugar I've been eating...) |

Wow your hdl and ld look great even if the tri's are a bit higher. I always feel a bit sluggish when I restart induction after being off-plan. Once ketosis restarts I'm usually pretty good to go. I am very impressed wth your exercise routine! WTG! It's so good for you. That is something I really need to develop. I am still trying to find a decent water exercise class near me. I kinda want to lose a little more weight first tho- not sure I'd fit in my old swimsuit lol.
Keep up the good work!

Well, I'm back.
I am on day 2 of induction.
I don't have numbers to post except my weight. It was 99 kilo before I started. Yikes. That's almost 6 kilo more than when I started last time, 5 years ago.
Yesterday, day 1, I felt great.
Today, I was running around with my elderly mother who has a broken ankle. She had a doc's appointment at the hospital and we spent the day there with me pushing her around in a wheelchair, going from doc to xray and back again and other various places. Then I had to get her back in the car and home. It was darn hard and I stared to feel really, really lousy and coldy. Maybe the Atkins flu?
Here's what I ate today:
breakfast - 3 eggs fried in butter.
snack - triangle cheese
lunch - baked fish + lettuce and cuke and one slice of tomato
snack - 2 triangle cheese (high fat, low carb)
dinner - chicken breasts slathered in mayo and mustard, pan fried. + lettuce and red pepper
That's it. I look forward to making some serious progress here. |

Still hanging in. Day 3.
Woke up with a fierce headache. 2 Tylenols and a cup of coffee did the trick.
Got on the scale at the gym and saw a 1.3 kilo loss! Ok, it's only water weight but it sure is nice to see the scale moving in the right direction.
Breakfast was 3 eggs in butter
Lunch - spare ribs + broccoli and salad
snack - smoked salmon
dinner - tuna with a load of mayo + lettuce salad. + 2 hard boiled eggs (today was heavy on the eggs) |

Thanks, Tracy. It's nice to be able to come here and get some support! I find that reading DANDR also gives me motivation. Nothing like real, live people though |

Day 4 of induction.
Eggs for breakfast
tuna salad, lettuce and red pepper for lunch + triangle cheese
chicken breast with lettuce, red pepper and celery for dinner
A little too much broccoli eaten.
What a laugh. Now cheating is eating a little too much broccoli!
I probably didn't drink enough today. Tomorrow I'll try to behave. |

Day 5 - induction
I got on the scale this morning at the gym and saw...... 96.5.
That's 2.5 kilo less than I saw 5 days ago! (1 kilo = 2.2 lbs) |
