Thanks! I love the sound of Gaelic, but I can never figure out pronounciation when I see it in writing... Bad eye-brain coordination or something... |

I pronounce it Caoimhe. There are two versions for Jeffrey, Seafraid(Sheh-frid), and Seathrun (Sheh-hrun). Se tends to be shh, as in Sean. |

How cool. I love it when a name is in multiple languages like John being Sean and Juan or William (I think) being Liam and Guisseppe. I've accepted my first name though it's not one I would have chosen for myself and it doesn't translate well. BTW, I love Gaelic.

No sorry, Kwee-va! I grew up with the language, so I forget the sounds are strangely spelt! |

Well I don't know what happened this week.
I was good all week, even on the weekend. On Sunday morning I was down to 303 even from 304.8 last Wednesday.
Sunday was the same as every other day, I was even conscience about water and drank more than enough and wasn't cheating.
Monday morning came, BAM, 308.5 lbs!!!!!!! I wouldn't think it would be possible to gain that much weight (water I guess) in 24 hours but I did it.
Since then, I haven't changed anything and this morning I'm back to 304.6 lbs today which is a bit of a disappointment but I'm still on track I guess if I can stay the course.
Very weird however. I thought maybe I was getting sick, flu or something but so far not. It was a bit of a stressful weekend and few days at the home front (wife in nursing school, into final exams, small kids that want her attention, trying to get her to go stay at her parents for a few days and then playing mom and dad for a while) but I wouldn't think it would do this.
I never thought to check to see if I was out of ketosis but I can't see how I could be as this was the first weekend I didn't cheat at all.
So still doing the same stuff, eating the same way this week and we'll see what happens next week.
Anyways, the numbers:
Starting Weight (October 22, 2008): 330.2 lbs
Week 1 (October 29, 2008): 322.6 lbs (-7.6 lbs)
Week 2 (November 5, 2008): 320.2 lbs (-2.4 lbs)
Week 3 (November 12, 2008): 319.2 lbs (-1.0 lb)
Week 4 (November 19, 2008): 312.2 lbs (-7.0 lb)
Week 5 (November 26, 2008): 310.6 lbs (-1.6 lb)
Week 6 (December 3, 2008): 304.8 lbs (-5.8 lb)
Week 7 (December 10, 2008): 304.6 lbs (-0.2 lb)
Week 8 (December 17, 2008): Pending...
Week 9 (December 24, 2008): Pending...
Week 10 (December 31, 2008): 295 lbs (Holiday Challenge Goal!!)
In 7 weeks I'm down 25.6 lbs for an average weekly loss of 3.66 lbs per week. |

You're doing really well and I understand how weird it is when you stick on plan and have a little halt on the scales. It keeps happening to me too.
Stress is a big factor with lots of people and that may be the answer. However, I'm sure it'll startt melting off you again soon.
Well done on such great progress. Do you feel better already? I've got so much more energy and I'm much more agile than before.

I feel better already but not physically. More a feeling of pride for being back in control of my diet. Not even so much what I eat but how much I eat. I'm able to do this by avoiding the insulin highs/lows by cutting most carbs out of my diet, but no where near induction levels. To be honest, I was heavier this time than last time I lost a lot of weight but I felt better as I have been more active even thought I put the weight back on. I'm finding myself not even having to exercise more this time around. Just adjusting my diet to just being reasonable instead of absolute gluttony is making a difference.
I'm expecting to be close to my Sunday weight again tomorrow as it was a great day again for me diet wise. I'm hoping by next Wednesday to be back into the 200's supposing it is 299.8 |

Well the scale was kind this morning. My stall was short lived and this morning I'm down to 302.2 lbs. I should easily break the 300 barrier before next weigh in. |

Not a great week. I've had a bit of a cold and cheated a little bit a couple of times, haven't been drinking enough but I'm still down a tad. I was at 295.6 on Sunday but that's when I started feeling sick and went up a bit. I'm sure it is just water weight cause I've hardly been eating and drinking very little.
3 pounds to go to meet my goal for next week. Fingers crossed.

I'm going to cheat today and use my weight from yesterday. I went out with some friends last night and had way too much libations and nash and thus I'm retaining a ton of water weight. Yesterday morning I was at a new low after having gone through all of Christmas without cheating. I was saving it for last night
I met my holiday challenge goal of 295 and even got a little bit lower so I'm delighted. My goal for January is to get to 280 even by January 28.
Anyways, the numbers:
Starting Weight (October 22, 2008): 330.2 lbs
Week 1 (October 29, 2008): 322.6 lbs (-7.6 lbs)
Week 2 (November 5, 2008): 320.2 lbs (-2.4 lbs)

Week 5 (November 26, 2008): 310.6 lbs (-1.6 lb)
Week 6 (December 3, 2008): 304.8 lbs (-5.8 lb)
Week 7 (December 10, 2008): 304.6 lbs (-0.2 lb)
Week 8 (December 17, 2008): 298.4 lbs (-6.2 lb)
Week 9 (December 24, 2008): 298.0 lbs (-0.4 lb)
Week 10 (December 30, 2008): 293.8 lbs (-4.2 lb)
Week 14 (January 28, 2009): 280 lbs (End of January Mini Goal)
In 10 weeks I'm down 36.4 lbs for an average weekly loss of 3.64 lbs per week. |

Your doing great! I don't think its cheating when you worked so hard to get to your weight yesterday and you know its just a question of getting off the water weight that you are retaining now from last nights drink.
The great thing about this WOE is we know what to do to get back on track and it doesn't take long to see the rewards.
You'll be back on your losing streak really soon.
Happy New Year to you. and well done for such great progress so far.

I agree with Helen; you've done brilliantly (you've lost more than 10% your body weight!) and you should feel proud of your accomplishments rather than ashamed of an event you had planned for.
By all means, hydrate up, it helps with a hangover as well as the weight loss. Take care and have a great new year.

I wasn't ashamed at all actually. Been doing well, getting lots of compliments and thus really motivated to keep it up and get down to an even healthier weight.
Another event tonight where I'll be off plan and I'm not too worried. Even though I plan to drink I'm avoiding most high carb food. I've kept the calories a little lower today to help keep in balance. I'll steer clear of the chip bowl and the bread dips and nacho type stuff and treat myself when the wings/meatballs/ etc come out. I seem to be able to even have 1 or 2 chocolates without caving in and eating a bowl full. I do love to drink however and I don't do it very often at all normally so when friends are around and get together, I usually don't worry too much about it for one night. Unfortunately my favorite drink is a screw driver which I'm still drinking but I've cut the orange juice in half and top it off with Diet 7-up. Gives it a nice fizz as well.
Anyways, I didn't even weight today. I'm hoping that on my next weigh in, Wednesday, I'll be at 293 and that should be attainable even after 3 nights out this week.
Have a good weekend everyone and Happy New Year. |

Did not do much the first week of the New Year after a couple of parties and eating festive treats. Been back on track since last week and almost back to the 280's for the first time since March 2006 I would guess.
Bought some new pants last week. Was wearing 42" and barely on my hips when I started. It was my refusal to buy 44" pants that got me on the diet again. Now I'm wearing 40" pants properly around my waist. I'm in 5 notches on the same belt.
Starting Weight (October 22, 2008): 330.2 lbs
Week 1 (October 29, 2008): 322.6 lbs (-7.6 lbs)
Week 2 (November 5, 2008): 320.2 lbs (-2.4 lbs)
Week 3 (November 12, 2008): 319.2 lbs (-1.0 lb)
Week 4 (November 19, 2008): 312.2 lbs (-7.0 lb)
Week 5 (November 26, 2008): 310.6 lbs (-1.6 lb)
Week 6 (December 3, 2008): 304.8 lbs (-5.8 lb)
Week 7 (December 10, 2008): 304.6 lbs (-0.2 lb)
Week 8 (December 17, 2008): 298.4 lbs (-6.2 lb)
Week 9 (December 24, 2008): 298.0 lbs (-0.4 lb)
Week 10 (December 30, 2008): 293.8 lbs (-4.2 lb)
Week 11 (January 7, 2009 ): 293.8 lbs (0 lb)
Week 12 (January 14, 2008): 290.4 lbs (-3.4 lb)
Week 14 (January 28, 2009): 285 lbs (End of January Mini Goal)
In 12 weeks I'm down 39.8 lbs for an average weekly loss of 3.32 lbs per week. |

Well I didn't update last week. After week 12 I kind of got a bit to relaxed and fell off the wagon a bit and had a bad weigh in for week 13. I was eating junk like a pig but I only put on a pound. After that kick in the pants I got back on track and yesterday for probably the first time since April or May of 2006, I'm back into the 280's. Woo hoo!
I didn't meet my mini goal for January of 285. There are a couple of days left and I'll be pretty active during those days so I might sneak down there but I doubt it.
New mini goal of 275 for 5 weeks out, March 4 which should be obtainable if I keep same rate up. It gets harder to lose the more I lose so maybe I'm being a bit optimistic but we shall see.
Starting Weight (October 22, 2008): 330.2 lbs
Week 1 (October 29, 2008): 322.6 lbs (-7.6 lbs)
Week 2 (November 5, 2008): 320.2 lbs (-2.4 lbs)
Week 3 (November 12, 2008): 319.2 lbs (-1.0 lb)
Week 4 (November 19, 2008): 312.2 lbs (-7.0 lb)
Week 5 (November 26, 2008): 310.6 lbs (-1.6 lb)
Week 6 (December 3, 2008): 304.8 lbs (-5.8 lb)
Week 7 (December 10, 2008): 304.6 lbs (-0.2 lb)
Week 8 (December 17, 2008): 298.4 lbs (-6.2 lb)
Week 9 (December 24, 2008): 298.0 lbs (-0.4 lb)
Week 10 (December 30, 2008): 293.8 lbs (-4.2 lb)
Week 11 (January 7, 2009 ): 293.8 lbs (0 lb)
Week 12 (January 14, 2008): 290.4 lbs (-3.4 lb)
Week 13 (January 21, 2008): 291.6 lbs (+1.2 lb)
Week 14 (January 28, 2009): 288.8 lbs (-2.8 lb)
...............................................
Week 19 (March 4, 2009): 275 lbs February Mini Goal
In 14 weeks I'm down 41.4 lbs for an average weekly loss of 2.96 lbs per week. |

I've just finished reading your entire thread, and it's got a lot of good stuff in it. I only wish I could achieve results as rapidly as you do! From the sounds of things, you're really active whereas I'm really sedentary. I'm trying to work on that, but it's been hard to think of things to do in this cold weather we're having.
I like your status update format, and think I'll borrow it for my thread. |

John I try to be active but not half as active as I would like. I work from home for a company 7000km away. I don't even get the exercise associated with a daily commute. I literally work 50 feet from my bed. When I worked in that city I had to walk at the very least 3+ km a day just getting to from work. This was part of my blowing back up when I lost that exercise.
Because work is so accessible for me, and I truly enjoy my career, it is easier for me to work a couple of extra hours than to go exercise.
I love being active I just go in bouts with discipline. I can go for weeks of exercising regularly and then get lazy for weeks. I have yet to find a balance.
I do get out once a week to play basketball with young men 10+ years my junior and I love it. I'm still a bit heavy to start training for running again but another ten pounds and I"ll be pounding the pavement again as I really love running (but HATE treadmills).
I was considering doing a "Cardio Boot Camp" in February but had to give up on that as I'll be traveling a couple of weeks for work as well as a couple of personal snowmobiling trips so I can't commit to an hour of group exercise every day but hopefully in March I can get to do this.
You have to find something you enjoy. Because of my semi white collar job, I actually enjoy 'working' so when money allows I do renovations and landscaping and things like that on my own and find that helps in the exercise department as well.
If you learned one thing from my thread I hope its that if you return to old eating habits and no exercise, the weight will come back on. I found it much harder to get going on this diet the second (third, fourth, fifth) time around so will be more diligent this time if I get to where I want to be. |

I think we're of a fairly similar size, so I have another question for you - what's it going to be like when I finally do get down closer to 200? Am I going to have problems with loose skin? Anything else worth mentioning?
I already picked up by reading someone elses thread that they were amazed by how much harder it was for them to stay warm - not that that's a major deal by any means, just interesting to know. |

I've noticed after losing 68 lbs that it's incredibly hard for me to stay warm. At 200+ I was so hot all the time. Now at 136 I can NEVER get my body warm. I feel permanently frozen this winter!
Congrats on the loss Bag! |

I never noticed a problem with excess skin last time. I had a little but not enough to bother me.
I was constantly cold when I lost all the weight last time. Even when I put it back on it seems my metabolism was changed as I always wear a sweater and I'm never overly hot. |

Update post.
After my last update I got lazy, started doing my winter travelling and skidooing with my buddies which of course resulted in bad food choices and alcohol.
I was up to 317 again a couple of months ago. At that time I started eating a little better and I started training for a 10 mile road race in July. I've been religious with my running and my cross training as well so I have not lost a lot of weight but I am down several inches.
I'm still eating a few too many carbs so here I am again to try and regain my focus. As before I'm not going to do a full blown induction and I'll eat some fruit and small quantities of bread. This was working for me this fall and early winter until I started eating way too much crap again.
I'm surprised the running is going as well as it is. I'm not fast but I haven't injured myself yet, despite my weight.
Anyways, with a little focus I think I can easily drop 30-35 pounds between now and July 26 which will help my time in the race for sure. It's like I'm training with a weighted vest.
I don't know why but I always do better when I post and read here. You would think I would want to be accountable to myself more so that strangers scattered over the internet but alas not. Hopefully one of these days I'll figure this all out.
Starting Weight (October 22, 2008): 330.2 lbs
Week 1 (October 29, 2008): 322.6 lbs (-7.6 lbs)
Week 2 (November 5, 2008): 320.2 lbs (-2.4 lbs)
Week 3 (November 12, 2008): 319.2 lbs (-1.0 lb)
Week 4 (November 19, 2008): 312.2 lbs (-7.0 lb)
Week 5 (November 26, 2008): 310.6 lbs (-1.6 lb)
Week 6 (December 3, 2008): 304.8 lbs (-5.8 lb)
Week 7 (December 10, 2008): 304.6 lbs (-0.2 lb)
Week 8 (December 17, 2008): 298.4 lbs (-6.2 lb)
Week 9 (December 24, 2008): 298.0 lbs (-0.4 lb)
Week 10 (December 30, 2008): 293.8 lbs (-4.2 lb)
Week 11 (January 7, 2009 ): 293.8 lbs (0 lb)
Week 12 (January 14, 2008): 290.4 lbs (-3.4 lb)
Week 13 (January 21, 2008): 291.6 lbs (+1.2 lb)
Week 14 (January 28, 2009): 288.8 lbs (-2.8 lb)
...............................................
Week 33 (June 10, 2009): 305.6 lbs (+16.8 lb)
In 33 weeks I'm down 24.6 lbs for an average weekly loss of 0.75 lbs per week.

Welcome home, Bagadonitz!
You ARE accountable to yourself... not to us. We're just here to urge you along and support your efforts! But sometimes, knowing you're going to share your success/failure can make the difference in a choice... and you'll pick more good choices than poor choices because of it.
Good luck, you can do this.

Yes that's my point. Amazing what you can justify to yourself at moments of weakness and I find just by knowing that I have to poast, and wanting to poast success and not failure, makes making better choices easier. |

It's good to see you back, I don't think we've both been active much at the same time before, but I followed your entire original progress thread, and it was a big inspiration to me. Nice update posting format BTW
I agree that posting here (and forcing myself to do so honestly) makes it easier for me to hold myself accountable.
For me the biggest thing about posting here is I have to take my thoughts and translate them into a format for other people. Going through this process often results in me evaluating things differently than I did when they were just thoughts in my head. Weird, but true.
Also, just the sheer breadth of knowledge I've gained here has helped me immensely - I started with just a basic, very flawed knowledge of some thing called "Atkins" (how hard can this be, you just eat bacon and cheese all day, right?), to actually understanding Atkins - and then branching out much further into how/why low carb works, how conventional wisdom of "fat bad, carbs good" is so harmful and deciding I want to make this a permanent way of life (as well as get fit for the first time in my life).
I don't know if you (or anyone else reading this thread, either now or in the distant future) is familiar with them, but I really felt like I got a lot out of Protein Power (book/blog), Mark's Daily Apple (blog) and the Primal Blueprint (book), and I highly recommend them to everyone else. |

Glad you liked the thread and glad it helped you. It helps me too when I take the time to come here and read it. I've made the site my homepage again and have set aside 30 minutes in the day to read the posts at least and if I have something to add, add it. I find myself not wanting to poast some times because of my past slip ups but I'm trying to get over that and concentrate on the now and perhaps set an example again and make it stick this time. |

If ever I had a week to teach me the importance of staying focused, this was it. On Saturday morning past I was 300.2 lbs but a night out with the guys (first time in years that we did it) full of libations and gnash set me up for a big rise once everything settled on Monday. I was up to 305.6 and it took me until today to get things back and under control.
I need to take a weekend away from socializing and get a good full weeks loss under my belt to get motivated again.
All in all, not bad for the week considering. This week I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing minus the fast/junk food on the weekend. I can usually get a way with a few drinks but when a few too many turns into splitting plates of nachos, time to slow it down.
On the exercise front, in the last week I have run 24 km (15 miles) with some of that being hill training (up & down, up & down), some of it non stop (5-6km) on one 10 km stint of 10 min/1 min interval training. This week I will be upping the hill count and adding on a 10&1 interval for a total of 8. That long run is on Sundays which makes me less likely to cheat on Saturday I haven't done any cross training this week so it is time to get back to that as well. Just been SO busy.

Oh my!! I just realized something else!!!!!
It is two years today since I last had a cigarette and I didn't even think on it till I was just looking at the calendar to see if I had anything to do today.
This is a major milestone for me as smoking was always a hurdle and another excuse for not eating right (as in "what difference does it make if I still smoke.").
Hopefully that demon is gone for good. The extra money helps for sure with the extra it costs to eat right (at least it does around here).
To put it in perspective, I've been using another online site to keep track of my "QUIT" that keeps track of how many cigs I have not smoked based on how much I was smoking and how much I have saved based on what I was paying for them. Here is the stats:
| www.quitnet.com wrote: |
730 days, 15 hours, 16 minutes and 59 seconds smoke free.
18266 cigarettes not smoked.
$9,594.38 and 4 months, 19 days, 12 hours of your life saved.
Your quit date: 6/17/2007 8:35:00 PM
|
I'm very happy about this I have to say and it is very motivating for me to have gotten here. Now that I'm running again it is already evident what a difference NOT smoking for two years makes on that front. When I drop some more weight I should be faster now than I was back in 04 by a wide margain. |

Awesome, definitely a good thing.
From some of the stuff I've been seeing recently, willpower really is like a muscle that actually needs to be built up. The more you exercise it, the easier it becomes, so hopefully after tackling the smoking and the carbs you'll be ready for anything else life can throw at you! |

Out of curiosity, on your first attempt when you got down to 220 lbs what was your pant size compared to 330? |

At that time I started back then I was 320 when I started. At that time I was wearing 44 pants and they would no longer fit and I would not buy 46. Of course those sizes were inaccurate as I wasn't wearing them properly (that is mr. gut was out over instead of in them).
At 220, I was down to a size 36 so I figure I dropped 8-10 pant sizes back then.
This time at 330 when I started, believe it or not, I was slimmer. I was wearing 42 and then were getting tight. I'm in 40 now but they are pretty tight as well.
This morning 300.8 lbs |

The Friday, keep myself as honest as I can for the weekend weigh in to help me keep my sabotaging to a minimum:
299.2 lbs
I got me a good old whoosh week going and hopefully I don't sabotage it during the weekend like I have been lately. I will be very happy on Monday morning if I'm still into the 300's again. I doubt I'll ever see the 100's but things look better here in the 200's.
Me and wifey are going out with some friends tonight so I know I'll end up having a few bevvys but I swear I'm staying away from the chips and sweets. The home we are going to usually eat healthy so I'm sure I will have choices and if not, no big deal as I don't eat after supper usually anyways.
The wife is working two long day shifts all weekend so I'll have to occupy the kids alone which will keep me from having too many carb laden drinks. I'll have a couple tonight but they will be a low carb brew and I'll adjust my other carbs accordingly.
On top of that, I have to do two runs this weekend. I'll be doing a 6 km non stop today which should take me about 40 minutes or less hopefully. Then on Sunday I have a 12 km 10 & 1 run planned. I would be really happy if I could get that in 85 or so minutes but I have to watch my pace as my shins have started to bother me a little lately.
So far it is going well this time around. I'm trying to eat more as I generally don't eat enough when doing this as I'm just not hungry but while what I eat might be fine when I'm 220 lbs it is not enough now at 300 lbs. I was bragging to my wife on Wednesday that I was in ketosis already and didn't get the "Atkin's Flu" and that came back to bite me in the ass yesterday as my head pounded the whole day. It is still here a little this morning but I have not ate or drank anything yet (waiting to get the kids off to school). Then I'll have my two egg white, three bacon slice, coffee, yogurt &/or fruit/berries which will set me straight. I'll probably forgo the fruit today in exchange for the anticipated brews tonight. |

It was a good week.
I was mostly very strict but I did sway a little Friday night by having some beer (low car stuff) and a cheat with food on Saturday (took the kids to McDonald's and I snuck a couple of their fries) but other than that I stayed on plan and didn't go out of ketosis at any point.
Since last Wednesday I've run 29 km training for my 10 mile race. My times were definitely slower than they have been but on the last run on Monday I felt much more energetic now that the old body is getting used to fatty acids. I'm hoping to knock at least a minute per km off in the next 4 weeks and it is easy enough to knock that off 1 km but to knock it off 16 of them in a row is another story.
Sample menus for me this week include things such as bacon (3-4) strips or breakfast sausages (3 links) with whites from two eggs fried for breakfast. Some days I had a piece of fruit with this such as a banana or an apple or pink grapefruit. Other times I have a low carb & low fat yogurt with it (they have about 6 g of carbs).
Lunch includes generally a garden or Caesar salad with some cold baked chicken and either Caesar or Italian dressing. In the Caesar I'll have parmesan cheese and bacon bits (from real bacon) probably 2 teaspoons of each. In a garden salad its whatever is in the fridge but usually includes some peppers, onions, celery. Also cheese, cheddar and not much more than an ounce as I'm not a huge fan of cheese anyways.
Dinner generally is a steak, pork chop, chicken breast and vegetable such as broccoli or asparagus. Both usually grilled this time of year. Occasionally a burger will find its way into the mix and I try and load it up with lettuce, tomato, bacon, etc and leave the bread out of it. If I just want a quick dinner, I'll just get another salad such as at lunch and increase the meat that goes on it.
Snacks are my favorite. Probably a pepperoni stick, an ounce of cheese, probably 10 each or almonds and macadamia nuts, and this week cause they were available 4-5 each of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, 1-2 strawberries and 1-2 small chunks of fresh pine apple.
I realize that this is way outside the wrung of induction but my tolerance is higher than 20 g, I'm able to stay in ketosis and still lose weight while fussing a little less over what I can eat so I go with it.
Starting Weight (October 22, 2008): 330.2 lbs
Week 1 (October 29, 2008): 322.6 lbs (-7.6 lbs)
Week 2 (November 5, 2008): 320.2 lbs (-2.4 lbs)

Week 5 (November 26, 2008): 310.6 lbs (-1.6 lb)
Week 6 (December 3, 2008): 304.8 lbs (-5.8 lb)
Week 7 (December 10, 2008): 304.6 lbs (-0.2 lb)
Week 8 (December 17, 2008): 298.4 lbs (-6.2 lb)
Week 9 (December 24, 2008): 298.0 lbs (-0.4 lb)

Week 34 (June 17, 2009): 302.2 lbs (-3.4 lb)

The Friday, keep myself accountable on the weekend poast.
293.6 lbs
Yes, that's down 3.4 lbs in two days which is insane and I don't know why but I feel fine. I've been certainly eating as much as I should, probably more, and drinking plenty of water so I guess this is just some extra water weight that I've been carrying around since early February when I was down to 287 lbs.
In case it isn't I'm not going to be too upset if I rebound a little this weekend as 3.4 lbs is a bit much to lose in two days. However I will be running about 7 km this evening and 13 on Sunday so I guess we'll see what happens. |

Well I was good all weekend and I ran 20 km since the Friday weigh-in but as I expected I leveled out a little and I'm up to 294 lbs even this morning. |
