Hi there,
I'm new and my husband and I are doing extended induction.
I've heard that the Atkins Bars and Shakes stall weight loss....is this true?
Also....how many forms of Atkins are there. On one board that I've seen everybody says that 2002 Atkins is the best. What's the difference? |

well, the only forums important to *me* are this one, and the atkins.com one
anyway, welcome along -
there's a new book out right now called "the new atkins for a new you" or something like that, but aside from that one, yes, the 2002 book is the one! either one of those will be good - o n the atkins.com site they're touting the new book of course, but i haven't read it yet. i'm sure it's great, but i just don't know til i read it, you know??
anyway, - i would skip the bars and shakes, as yes, they are full of sugar alcohols, and may well stall you! stick to real food - and you won't be disappointed. atkins means FOOD, glorious FOOD, and lots of it! eat til you're satisfied, how good is that!
so but one of those books, read it, and stick to it! you'll do great (warning though - your dh will likely lose faster; don't be discouraged, that's just how it is!)
keep us posted!

I have used the bars here and there but honestly I do think they stall me. I try to stay away from them as much as possible. |

I got a box of the bars and were stunned at how good they are - as good as any candy bay on the shelf and that's no exaggeration! Then I saw the carb count (22 I think?) and felt deceived by Atkins. My three kids were thrilled to get a box of candy bars.
As for the Atkins Advantage shakes, they've been a big part of my success! 4 grams of carbs and satisfied many cravings and filled me up many times. Not sure at all that I could have done it without those shakes! |

Hi, Justin! Nice to meet you!
I use the shakes at least once per week. They are VERY nutritionally sound.
The "RULES" say you should NOT substitute them for a breakfast. I do. My appetite is small, my calorie requirement is small, and my CCL is small.
OK for me. And add a dash of cinnamon and vanilla and they taste good to me!

anyway, re the bars - the count is not actually 22 - you can subtract the sugar alcohols and glycerin...i wouldn't give them to my kids

from atkins.com, re their products:
There is a considerable amount of confusion about the net carb count on the front of the package, and what you calculate based on the information given in the Nutrition Facts panel.
Here is the explanation:
In the case of most foods, Net Carbs are calculated by subtracting fiber grams from total carb grams, as fiber doesn’t impact blood sugar levels. However, in the case of low-carb products that contain sugar alcohols (aka polyols), including glycerin, which also have a negligible impact on blood sugar, they too are also subtracted to yield the Net Carb count. Despite their name, sugar alcohols are not he same thing as sugar. They are listed in the Nutrition Facts panel as a subset of total carbohydrates, but glycerin, by law, cannot be listed there. Any discrepancy in the calculation is due to the grams of glycerin in the product.
In the case of Atkins bars, the glycemic (blood sugar) impact has also been directly tested on volunteers, so you can rely on the accuracy of the stated Net Carb count.

I am in pre-maintenance and trying to figure out if Dreamfield's Pasta and Atkins Bars and shakes (all CLAIM to not affect the glycemic index) apply to me.
When I determine that (totally subjective...not a scientific study) I will let you know. I am skeptical!

Sorry... no strawberries!!! No fruit at all. Check out the Induction Foods list so you know what you can/can't eat on Induction! There aren't a lot of rules, but there are some... read up on Atkins so you're not wasting your time doing it "wrong".
Welcome to the forum, too!!! |

Berries come in later in OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss). No nuts, no berries, no alcohol until then. |

Well I made up a dressing - is it okay to put carb free ish (0.3g) nando's peri peri sauce into mayo (0.4g) as a dressing? or tabasco and mayo as a salad dressing? Actually I can't see mayo on the induction list, I worked out my dressing to be like 1 gram carb in total. What salad dressing can I have? today I have just the oil from tinned mackeral with some mayo on my mackerel salad. |

Your new best friend is going to be that Induction food list... from the list:
Salad Dressings - Any prepared salad dressing with no added sugar and no more then two net carbs per
serving (1 - 2 tablespoons is a serving)
• Blue Cheese 2 tbs 2.3
• Caesar 2 tbs 0.5
• Italian 2 tbs 3.0
• Lemon juice 2 tbs 2.8
• Oil and vinegar 2 tbs 1.0
• Ranch 2 tbs 1.4
Fats and Oils – No net carbs here, but keep in mind the serving size is approximately 1 tablespoon.
• Butter
• Mayonnaise – make sure there is no added sugar
• Olive oil
• Vegetable oils – especially good if they are labeled “cold pressed” or “expeller pressed” One of the
best oil to use is olive oil.
o Canola
o Walnut
o Soybean*
o Grape seed
o Sesame
o Sunflower*
o Safflower
I like mayo mixed with cajun or chipolte powder. Very good to dip chicken into!!
Hope this helps. |

Tril.. vegetable oils that contain Trans fats are an absolute no-no and includes things like corn and veg cooking oil, margarine, shortening and processed fats...
For vegetable oil stick to cold pressed - these are always in dark glassed bottles and should be kept cool and out of sunlight... |

I was quoting the Atkins Induction foods list and rules to answer Alibo's question regarding mayonaise and salad dressing. Margarine and shortening are not on that list. Corn oil is not on that list. I totally agree with you on the trans fats... and I avoid them, too. I also do not use soybean oil for personal reasons, even though it's on the Atkins list. But Alibo can, if she chooses. |
